Sam Lair, a very cranky smith, made them in the 70's. They are listed in the Blue Book of Gun Values. Sam was in Jenks, Oklahoma. Mine was serial#002. It was made for Charlie Williams. I believe Charlie was the father of the Shilen triggers. Charlie also made the Benchmaster receivers.
Red Cornelison was in the first 3 in the Benchrest Hall of Fame and was a friend. Several years ago Red said I need to build a 22-284. I bought a 700 Remington and got a barrel from Harold Broughton. Red said Sam was the man to do it. I called Sam and he told me that he didn't give a shit what I wanted, he wouldn't do it and don't bother him. I asked Red about it and he called Sam. He told me to get back with Sam. I did and Sam said send him the parts and he would do it, but if I bothered him he would take a hacksaw to my barrel. Sam built a CM follower and tigged it to the bottom of the receiver. He reamed the raceways and did the machining of the lug abbuttments, and single point threaded the threads, and facedv off the front ring. He put the receiver in a cylindrical grinder and touched up the outside. I had several people look at it and thought it was a rare SS 700 long action. It would be rare as they never made any. He took the bolt and bushed the OD to match the reamed raceways. He bushed the face of the receiver and made it a .062 firing pin hole and a matching firing pin. He also machined both the front and back of the bolt lugs and the bolt face. He chambered the barrel to use the Jimmy Knox, JLK bullets that he was fooling with at the time. 90 grain boat tails.
Lot more to this story, but I can't type much more with one finger.

I have bought Jimmy and Lois's bullet many times.

Killed a truckload of Rockchucks with those 80gr .224 VLD's in a 22-284 over a five or six year span.

Jimmie's big love is his 32 Ford street rod. It is a beautiful, well done vehicle.

What does the story have to do with the picture above? There is no info about the No. 1 picture you posted.

Mickey in hempsville. You may want to start all over and read the whole thread. It ain't a Fluger#1! It is a Hyper Single. Read the whole thread and then I will answer any questions that you may have.

It looks like a Ruger No. 1, a very nice No. 1 at that. Your story drifted off to some Remington 700 and some A-hole gunsmith. I read about Sam, Charlie, and Jimmy. I done care about that. I was just wondering about more detail on the Ruger No. 1 looking “Hyper Single”. Is that a Benchmaster Receiver?

Main differences are fewer moving parts, an adjustable trigger, and a few refinements. I am on the wrong computer, but will try to post internal photos this afternoon.

It is not a No. 1, not even close.

I wonder if you get any up and down flex in the hanger? Side to side it looks pretty strong. Is the forearm free floated?

I can post the pictures to show everyone what we're talking about if you like, it's up to you.
