Damn, this week I did it! I ordered my first Ruger #1, chambered for the .475Linebaugh or .480Ruger. (The German general dealer didn´t know the exact chambering. Roll Eyes)I hope it will be the Linebaugh.

I hope so. And I will see it in nearly 6 month. This is the delivery time here in Germany.
Rebore the .480 to Linebaugh is possible, I know, but the Linebaugh is very unknown here and I see many problems with german proof houses. This civil servants sometimes aren´t the intelligent and cardridges not listed in their tables, don´t exist. Roll Eyes My dad build a rifle, chambered for the .318WR and an other for the .375Ruger. We have had only problems with this projects and the proof houses.
But it´s not so importend, if .480 or .475Linebaugh, this #1 have all the points I would to have. A medium sporter with 22" barrel, chambered for a rimmed big bore round, with less recoil, than the other big rounds, like the .405WCF and above. Wink

Since you have a proof house right there in Munich I would think you could clarify any issue with the Linebaugh with a phone call.

I understand about the civil servants I think goverment workers are the same everywhere, but in this case I was impressed with the knowledge of the guys at the proof house in Munich when I visited there. I think they will at least be familiar with the cartridge.

The bavarian goverment was planing to close the munich proof house. My dad was one of a few gunsmiths, working against this planing. But in the last 12 month we have had many problems with the "specialist" in munich. No knowledge about the .318WR and meaning the .375Ruger isn´t CIP proofed (we bought CIP ammo in spring 09). In the German tables of cartridges, are two .318 rounds. The .318Rimless NE and the .318WR, but the different ist about ~0,01mm in bore-diameter. Roll Eyes A few other problems followed, like thinking a brushed steelframe is made of aluminium. Roll Eyes
At the moment, we send all our guns to the proof house in Suhl.

Sounds like much has changed since I was there.

Thanks for the update on the proof house. I realze now that it was 9 years ago since I was there and like ao many good people in the gun business they retire before were done with them.

Is Suhl the nearest proofhouse outside Munich?

No, the nearest is in Ulm, but their have to long waiting time for gun proofing and the prices are too expensive. Suhl is nearly 330km away.

Yes, unfortunately this is correct. Many "good" men in the business, especial the general dealers, are retiered. The most younger have not the "feeling" for this business. But the greater problem is the new gun law in Germany, not realy good for business and junior staff.

It's the same chambering. They are chambered for the 475 Linebaugh, but will also shoot the 480 Ruger loads just fine as well.....it's merely the same cartride, just shorter

In two days, on wednesday, I will get the #1 rifle. To this day, I don´t realy know, is it a .480Ruger or the .475Linebaugh. But it´s not importend. The problem is only the german proof house. I will see.
I got a used Leupold vari scope for it. Loading die I have bought the RCBS, and the only brass I got is Hornady 480Ruger´s. .475Linebaugh brass and all .475 bullets are very rare in Germany. I ordered same different, but I got only Oregon Trail 355grs lead gascheck. Roll Eyes
I have only loading datas for Hornady und Speer soft or hollow points, but nothing for this lead bullet.
If I have the rifle, I will post same pic´s.

I have this rifle. Ruger stamps the box 475linebaugh/480 Ruger. The rifle itself is stamped 475 linebaugh. I have shot both 480 Ruger as well as 475 linebaugh. Fun gun to shoot really packs a punch. For the bullet you have I have not loaded them yet but I got reloading data from Oregon trail. Unfortunately they only provided data for the 480 Ruger. They have not tested loads in the 475 Linebaugh. The data they sent me follows. Velocities are listed at around 1350 or so. Loads are listed highest to lowest velocities. They only list one velocity don't know if the velocities that sent me are for min or max loads. The OAL is 1.620.

H110 Min 18.0 gr Max 23.5

Lil Gun Min 16.0 Max 22.0

H 4227 Min 18.0 Max 24.0

AA1680 Min 21.0 Max 25.5

Some pics of mine. Really nice buttstock.

For a minute, I talked with my dad on the telephone and he said, that the rifle is .480Ruger marked on barrel.
Unfortunately, I can´t go the next time to my dad´s gunstore and to see the rifle self.
Could it be a special distributor rifle, made for the german general dealer "Henke"? I don´t know.

Yes, too bad. Roll Eyes In Germany you need for nearly every bullsh*t a permit.
Today I was at the department of gunowning and hunting to get a new permit for using and buying smokless propelant. After 5 years you need a new one and for this 5 years I had a 20kg complete charge. But now, marksmen only get 10kg for 5 years. And if you need more, you need a special aplication form from your gun club. Roll Eyes
But I don´t want moan. I have 14 rifles and 3 handguns, and have had a lot of fun in the last years at shooting ranges, conventions and matches. The future will bring nothing good. This years we will get new laws about gun storage, with biometric and other idiotical ideas, especial for the owning of the evil handguns. We will see.

The 355 grain Oregon Trails bullets work just fine. I use them in my 480 pistol all the time. If you have the opportunity, order the latest Hodgdon paperback loading manual. It lists a lot of loads for both the 480 and the 475. You should be able to load the 480 to 475 balistics in the No 1 without any problems. However, you will only gain 100 to 200 fps, not enough to worry about. I'd just stick with the 480. Jim

Thanks Jim,
I know the Hodgdon datas. The Problem is only, it´s not really easy to get foreign, especially US smokeless propelant. Roll Eyes First, I will only test Vitha N110. And if I have the time, I will order some Lil´gun or so.
What for a .480Ruger pistol do you have? After I got the #1 rifle, I´m thinking about a custom single action revolver, like a reworked/rebarreld Ruger Bisley. It´s only an idea. I have three handguns, to get the permit for a forth, it´s nearly impossible in Germany. But to have the idea, it´s not forbidden. Big Grin

Today, I was at my dad´s gunstore and saw the rifle with my own eyes. Hmm.... Germany! The rifle left the USA as ".475Linebaugh" and here, the distributor and proofhouse, I mean, doesn´t know this round, dismarked it with "XXXXXXXX" and remarked it to ":480Ruger".
But I´m satisfied with the rifle. Shoots great!
