I'm not one to tell you why you shouldn't since I wouldn't be preaching what I practice. I like to handload and the Encore/Contender line gives me quite a number of cartridge choices and barrel lengths that will still fit in my gun safe. They're accurate as well. Though certainly usable as they come from the factory, a trigger job on an Encore makes it much nicer to shoot. There is a never ending debate on whether it's legal to put a handgun barrel on an Encore frame that was originally sold as a rifle or shotgun. I'm going to forgo giving an opinion since it has been discussed ad nauseum on this forum. To eliminate all questions, I would recommend buying a handgun frame to begin with.

What do you plan to use it for, and what calibers are you interested in? I have had Encores in both pistol and rifle versions. They each have their ups and downs. I had a blued 26" 375 H&H barrel in a peppered laminate stock for a while. I liked the look of the gun, it was nice and short overall, and changing calibers was a snap. But, the trigger was awful from the factory and only alright after a trigger job. The whole setup was 8.5", a lot heavier than I thought it should be for a single shot. Recoil was just unpleasant. Worse than my old 458 Win bolt action at the same weight. If you don't need the extra strength of the Encore, I'd recommend using the Contender instead. They have a better trigger, are lighter, and overall just more compact. If you handload you can get some pretty potent wildcats for it. Thats what I did. I sold both Encore's and went back to the Contender in both rifle and pistol forms. Shipping FedEx Ground keeps a small business running. "I'm not late, I'm early for tomorrow."

I have a couple Encore's in handgun and rifle version to include the muzzleloader. I find them to be very good and have acceptable accuracy. Mine are more in conventional calibers such as 223, 308, 280 and I have not had one in the big boomers such as 375 H&H so can't tell about those. Recoil and weight is very good in the standard calibers but I have heard that in the larger magnums they will rock you but then again this would not be my choice at all in a DG rifle. Hard to beat the muzzleloader option - one of the best there is out there.

I have one with a ProHunter 28" barrel in 204Ruger that is a tack driver. It is the standard blued frame and walnut stock. The trigger was kind of marginal when new but after working up test loads and shooting it some the trigger is now very good. I plan on buying more barrels for mine and have sold another rifle for this reason. I give them two thumbs up. Dennis Life member NRA
