Pardon my ignorance as most of my experience is with bolt actions, but is there a lightweight single-shot rifle/action that is suitable for something along the lines of a 250 Savage? I'm picturing something sub-7lbs all up.

Thanks,

Dan

Nothing in a 250 Sav. You may what to look for Ruger #1 on Gunsamerica and see if there is anything interesting.

My current project is a Thompson Center g2 with a 21" MGM barrel in 30/40 krag. Would like it alittle over 6 lbs. scoped. This will work for poking around looking for deer.

Clarke, you can get a TC Encore barreled in the 250 Savage but I don't know if you can get it below 7 lbs w/scope. Maybe, with the right contour and a synthetic stock you can.

Several versions of the H&R/NEF Handirifle make weight if you can live with a 243 instead of the 250. These are a tremendous value in a centerfire rifle, reliable, accurate, and affordable, but they are by no stretchs works of art http://www.hr1871.com/Firearms/Rifles/handiRifle.asp The G2 Contender makes weight (and can be lighter with custom barrels) but off the shelf offerings that run with the 250 are limited to 6.8 Remington and 7-30 Waters. http://www.tcarms.com/firearms...tenderCenterfire.php There are a few barrelmakers that have made 250 Savage tubes for the Contender; check with Mr. Tomek on the singleshot pistol section of the forum to see if recalls the maker. Winchester/Browning makes a Low Wall in 243 (and made a 260 at one time) but they weighed 8 lbs http://www.winchesterguns.com/...type_id=161&cat=014C After that there are the CZ, Merkel, and Blaser single-shot kipplaufs; prices start at well over a kilobuck. If you have unlimited finds I'm sure Dakota Arms would be happy to make you a Model 10 precisely how you want it. If you're not too picky they have one in stock http://www.dakotaarms.com/curr...Number=SS0766!^21072

Yes, there is. Dakota Model 10 can be had in 250 Savage or 250 Improved or a host of other cartidges which your heart may desire. And, while I covet one and don't own one, the weights I've seen run less than 7 lbs.

I flip between the 250 Savage and the 257 Roberts in ne of the Model 10's, but I'll still be coveting for a while yet...

Here is one for sale on Dakota's website in 250 Savage: http://www.dakotaarms.com/curr...Number=SS0766!^21072

If you click on one of the desciptions for the Model 10, they give standard cartidge weights of 6-7lbs.

Price for the one listed is a stunning $5,895. Which is why I'll continue to covet and not use.

I have handled some Dakota's Model 10's, but not shot one. They seem to be nice rifles.

I like Ruger No1's, have owned and shot some, but they are a little heavy in the small calibres, the 243 I used to have shot real good.

However my favorite single shot is the Blaser k 95. After using it I just like the break open, and take down style action.

And as it is a Blaser it is a shooter.

Clark

Take a look at the Ruger No1 1-A in 243.

The one I had was a very good shooter.

Assuming you are serious about ignorance, first, the .250 Savage was developed for a lever action, the 99, and is not the hottest cartridge around. It can be equaled quite easily with other cases. And often loaded hotter in bolt actions.

#2). The small, lightweight rifles might not be "up" to the diameter of the .250--too little metal left "around". It is based on the Mauser (and '06) rim. 0.473 inches. Go to a smaller body diameter and the number explodes.

H. Donaldson used the .30/30 rim for his .219 Don Wasp. It is also available in 6mm and anything else you want to work with. Contenders eat these up. Mr. D also used the .225 WCF case for a smaller rimmed version(s) suitable for the magazine of Mauser bolt type rifles. Mike Bellm, bellmtcs.com, rants on about a European rimmed round, like a .222 Mag case with a rim. The regular .222 with rim was made in Australia. No idea about availability. It can be "hot" safely in a Contender. .25/35 WCF is ancient (and on the .30/30 rim, originally a Ballard cartridge I believe, the .30/30 rim, .32/40). Improved it treads on the heels of the .250, again, safely in a contender.

Mr. Brown of eabco.com has a falling block action and developed a 7mm on the .219 Wasp case for pistol competition (and many wins). It is also available in a light rifle. He has a house line, 6mm, 6.5mm, .30... No .25, sorry, but you could order .25/35.

Last, my thinning memory, Navy Arms did a rolling block action pistol. .357 Mag cartridge so it must have some "strength." No telling what you could build real light. .357 Max? .357 Max case is same diameter as .222 family and can be necked down to the TCU (Thompson Center Ugalde) rounds with rim. Don't recall a .25 but 6mm and 6.5 mm for sure. Luck

I believe a Dakota #10 would do. It is light!

These guys make nice HighWall and Sharps rifles (or actions). They don't list the 250 Savage, but they're pretty flexible.

http://www.csharpsarms.com/index.php

I imagine you could order or make something light.

Clark,

Or possibly here:

http://www.americangunllc.com/

I don't know if they're up and running yet, but they're a sister company to McGowan barrels.

(Can you tell I've been looking at HighWalls?).

I think either a TC Contender carbine in 25/35 (or have it chambered in 25/30-30 AI), or a NEF Handi Rifle in .243 or 25-06.

I have several carbine barrels for my Contender. They are all at or below 7 pounds with scope.
