I have two 7x57s with the plan that one of them will become a 7x57R.

#1 is the second barrel of a Luxus Arms switch barrel set.

#2 is a Ruger No 1

I'm leaning towards "fixing" the Ruger at the moment but I don't really know why.

An unrelated question is what do I do with the Ruger No 3 I have been keeping to build a custom 7x57R? It will probably sit in the corner for a while longer until I get a new whim.

that #3 would be a great starting point for a full custom.

Consider something different, like an 8mmx72R.

There is no rush on the next project because I need to save up some $ as well as finish a couple of incomplete rifles.

The No 3 has been slated for several different builds over the past few years that have not happened for one reason or another. My next couple of thoughts are to build a single barrel 20 bore paradox rifle which should work on the No 3. I also want to build something on one of the Steve Earle Fraser actions but I do not think this action is large enough for a 20 bore rifle.

I hate to appear ignorant but that happens, what is the difference between the two?
I shoot a Dakota 7x57 and have seen the R but do not know the difference. Would someone enlighten me?

the R is for Rimmed

Other than the rim, not a lot. Factory loads are sometimes a bit milder in the rimmed version. I want one is the primary reason.

Mike, that is a good reason.
I have sold off all of my guns but one bolt 308 and my SS 7x57. That's the gun I hunt with and really do like that caliber.

7x57R for the single shot. killed very thing I have shot with mine.

Even a turkey tom on the fly with a head shot.

145gr speer at 2500 has enough power for turkeys when one shoots them in the head.

Did I mention it was a head shot when it was flying.

Today I am leaning toward converting the Luxus barrel. The Ruger handles rimless rounds just fine and the Luxus barrel would be easier to redo the extractor.

I have a Ruger #1 in 7x57 and my wife has a Merkel K3 in 7x57r.

If you handload then go with the Rimmed. If you don't then go with the regular 7x57. Ammo availability is significantly less with the rimmed version. I was lucky that I stumbled across a case of Hornady 7x57r 160's ages ago and that has supplied me with both brass and loads. Since then I haven't found any rimmed in any local gunshop.

I have both as well as an Ackley and I enjoy shooting with the 7x57R break open single shot. I don't really see any difference in the effectiveness in the real world although i can load the Ackley well beyond the ME/MV of the rimmed version. But the "R" is just downright pleasant to shoot...has tradition. I have enough RWS brass to last a lifetime and 150gr at 2600fps kills everything with antlers and hooves I intend to shoot.

Graf carries Hornady 7x57R ammo. I had Bailey build me one. Easy to shoot and very accurate !

Maybe I'm wrong about this (it has certainly happened before), but could not a rim recess be cut at the rear of the Ruger's 7x57 chamber to accommodate the 7x57R, and couldn't both the rimmed and rimless versions be used interchangeably and extract with the same extractor? Or am I missing something?

I believe you are correct. I know of a drilling in 7x57R that has a spring loaded pin in the rimmed extractor that operates perfectly, just as you surmise.

I'm hopeful the Luxus barrel will do that but will have to wait and see. In any case, the 7x57R is just irresistible for some reason.

My wife shoots a Merkel K1 in 7x57R and I have a drilling with the rifle in 7x57R. I also have an Austrian combo gun with a barrel in that fine caliber posted here.

The 7x57R is definitely a pleasure to shoot and it is very accurate in everything I have.

I built this one to use 7x57 and 7x57R interchangeably, have your smith cut a recess in the barrel for the rim of the x57R, and then use (start with) a magnum extractor No.1 / .534". Mine needed a slight touch with a rotary bit to drop behind the x57R rim, but now ejects either interchangeably. I didn't get lucky I know of another gentleman here in Canada who built the same way, it works.

Depending on the action as to choice, but if possible I would opt for the 7x57, and cut a long throat for it to shoot 160 gr. bullets seated .284 in the case..That gives you more powder space and a lot more velocity with H414 handloads that you have to work up, and the ones I have built still shot short 130 gr. Speers just fine.

If the action calls for rimmed then so be it.
