Anyone get to try a Pro Hunter barrel yet? I'm concidering a .270 win. Any thought about how much velocity you pick up with the 28" over a 24" barrel. I read some place that it's still a couple inches shorter then a Rem 700 with a 24" tube.
Thanks, Sam

I haven't handled one yet, but I expect the greatest advantage of the Pro Hunter will be improved handling, and the Encore can use all the help it can get in that arena. It will be interesting to see how much "free" velocity a fella gets going from 24 to 28 inches.

ohiosam, a good friend ordered one in 22-250 and i''m doing the reloading for it,he''s shot 30 reloads down the tube so far, first bullet i tryed was a 50 grain hornady v-max,seems like its brakeing in slow, but thats to be expected with a new barrel thats not lapped, starting load was 36.1 grains varget r-p brass cci-br2 primers, which gave us 3675 muzzle velocity,i''m 1grain and 5 tens under book max, its 13/16 of an inch thick at the muzzle end, great looking barrel stinless of course, but its way to early to pass judgement on what she''s capeable of doing now, and thats were a lot of people goof up all barrels are different, weather there custom jobs or plain factory products, yes a 26 or 28 inch barreled single shot rifle will be shorter than a remington model 700 with a 24 inch barrel because the action is so much shorter . hope i helped out , jjmp

hey guys i didn''t forget you on this topic Wink well my friend shot his encore again last sunday and we crnografed the load speer 50 grain sp 37.6 grains varget r-p case cci-br2 primer she averaged 3760 fps, can''t rember how tight she shot cause i was acting range master for 8 other people at the same time, no pressure signs and i''ll ask how good she shot at 100 yds, we were teamed with some high power shooters so my friend was shooting his 22-250 to 625 yards it was gusty and that little 50 had all she could handle if you get my drift, i''ll keep you imformed on this rifles progress... regards jjmp Smiler

I have 5 pro hunter barrels, but in Oklahoma it has been hotter than a witches tit, so haven't fired one yet. 308 Win, 25-06, 338 WM, 30-06 & 243. Looking forward to wringing them out.

I bought the frame and stock to assemble a stand-alone muzzlelaoder so I wouldn't have to switch barrels back and forth.
Observations on those parts only:
The frame, aside for some minor asthetics, isn't different. The adjustable hammer is not worth changeing for. It has less grasping surface than my other frames with hammer spurs and had a tendency to loosen before being LockTighted. The trigger was 'lawyer-proof'as it came at about 6 lbs. Some honing and spring from Mike Bellim got it down to 2.5.with no creep or overtravel.
The stock (you either love or hate the looks) isn't much different ergonomically from their previous synthetic stocks. It is thinner at the comb area so I had to add an aftermarket pad to line up with the dot sight I'm using; otherwise I was shooting with cheek barely touching the stock and very poor sight acquisition. Someone who plans to use a scope requireing medium or high rings will have the same problem. The new pad is much softer and appropriately sticky. The side vent in the stock with the same type of material protruding seems, to me, pure sales gimmick. The same stuff does seem to make the forearm stiffer, however, as it is applied to the surface there.
Having an accurate MZ barrel on hand I saw not need to replace it with the new version. It seems to have undergone the most meaningful change with grooves and easy-out breach plug.

Here's a source http://stevespages.com/table3.html scroll down to velocity vs barrel length doesn't go to 28" but there is an increase in velocity with a longer barrel.
