Paul, I have appreciated your input regarding the .270 1B project and have been pondering why it would seem that the first group is always the best in my range sessions. I am thinking that the cleanest bore is at this time even thought I clean between each 5 shots. I pace the shots and have the luxury of shooting right here in the yard, and loading on premise as well. Since I have the rifle out on the bench during the week, I am continuously pushing wet patches down the bore. Shooter's choice, JB and Butch's are the main cleaning agents and Kroil of course with the shooter's. Any thoughts which might push e further along the Bumpy Ruger Road? Perhaps the addition of moly to the bore and a corresponding change of friction would reproduce this condition (?) of less friction/cleaner bore.

I have a 25-06 Ruger 77 tang safety varmit heavy barrel that I bought new in the mid 80s. It would shoot 2 perhaps 3 half to three quarters inch groups and then they would open up quite considerably. Range cleaning with alternating patches of No.9 and barnes copper solvent would return the groups back where they needed to be. I decided to fire lap the barrel and that considerably helped keep my groups down for at least 5 5 shot groups. I've always found my ruger barrels to be very accurate, but also kind of rough inside.

good luck,

A mild firelap just might clean up that problem. I did this to one rifle. The instructions said to shoot ten of each grit with a thorough cleaning between each batch of ammo. The chamber must also be thoroughly cleaned, although the instructions neglected to sat this.. However, I only did five shots with each grit, then did a final shoot witht he bullets coated with JB compound. I'd read that you could sufficiently erode the throat by firelapping and could possibly mess up accuracy. Second, the most lapping will occur at the chamber end as the lapping material will be somewhat worn out by the time it reaches the muzzle. Just a couple of things to look out for. Yes, the limited firelapping I did worked out just fine in smoothing out a somewhat rough bore.

Paul,
I firelapped with 20 cast bullets rolled in Veral Smiths lapping compound, that's all. Cleaned the chamber and throat after every round and the barrel after every 5 rounds.

I used a kit from Midway. It had three grits. I used JB compound as a fourth grit. I used cast bullets, but decided to go with five rather than the ten they suggested as a cast bullet will hold a lot more grit than a jacketed bullet. I figured I'd be better off being a bit conservative with the grits.
