It occurred to me the other day that someone like Mr. Wisner could market a safety-slide for the #1 which places the activating button either left or right of a nicely contoured tang-sight base which COVERS the original safety slot. I like aperture sights, and mounting an aperture at the rear scope-base location on the #1 places it too far from the eye for optimum performance. Side mounts on the receiver are still fairly far forward, and also spoil the lines in my opinion. If a nicely-shaped base was made to accept the vertical staff of Lyman or Marble's tang sights, we could mount an aperture where it should be, close to the eye. Such a base would be made so as to "bridge" the safety slot front-to-back, with an opening to both sides for ambidextrous installation of a (Wisner?) side-extended button which could slide freely BESIDE the tang sight base while still using all the original safety components except the button itself. Perhaps the existing button could even be modified to provide an extension to the side of the sight base. The ends of the sight base should be smoothly contoured and faired into the receiver so it would neither injure a stray thumb nor impede ejection. I think this would be feasible. Whether or not it would be commercially successful is another question........ I'd be willing to field-test a prototype if asked! Regards from BruceB (aka Bren Mk1) | ||
