I have a supply of 350 and 405 gr. 45-70 hardcast lead bullets and was thinking about trying them out of my NEF. Does anyone out there shoot cast out of this rifle and how does it shoot. Also, what powders have you tried with good luck? Thanks Dennis

Sir: i shoot 340 and 420 grain cast bullets ( a little harder than ww) out of a 45-70 browning b78. because i don't like a lot of recoil in this light gun, i've stuck with 4227, 4198, and duplexed loads all @ +/- 1350. it seemed to me that the slower powders required higher charges to shoot well. good shooting, ned

G. ned, So far the only thing I have shot out of my 15" Encore and NEF has been Hornady 300 gr. hollow points that chrono'ed at 1700 out of the Encore. I didn't check them out of the NEF, but I do know that they will knock my hat off each shot if I don't turn it around backwards before I shoot. I shot a Corsican ram at about 60 yds. in March 2002 with it in my Encore and it turned him a complete flip. I am not very recoil shy with a pistol (if it kicks too hard I just work up to a load slowly) but torn rotator cuffs in both shoulders does make me reach for a sissy bag if I shoot many out of the NEF or my .308 Norma Mag . Thanks for the info. Dennis

Dennis, The most accurate load in my NEF, for cast bullet, involves a 350gr. Trouble is, to get the most accurate load, I must load a cast Lee .459 round ball under it! Using 13 or 14gr of Unique the bullets shoot better than any other combination I have put together. The balls go whereever they bloody want - but the bullets are powerful accurate. I'm experimenting now with dacron. But so far can't match that bullet & ball load.
