Most of the time this problem can be cured easily. The locking bolt /locking ramp on the lug is usually the problem. If the thumb break lever operates in a normal manner with normal resistance then the spring is ok. Remove the barrel and watch the locking bolt while operating the thumb lever. If the locking block swings easily when you push and release the lever look at the front edge of the locking block. It should not have any chipped places on the engagement surface. If everything appears ok,then smoke the locking ramp on the barrel lug and reassemble and close in the normal manner.Open the gun and check the engagement mark on the ramp,it most likely will be barely engaging the bolt. There will be a mark in the soot on the ramp that shows how much the bolt is engaged. The amount of engagement can be increased by carefully stoning the ramp,be careful to not change any angles. I have encountered and cured this problem on H&Rs and Contenders. WC

WC Crazy, Forgive my ignorance. I tore down the gun completely and cleaned it. What is the ramp? I know there are terms that people use that are different than what others use. In a break out diagram, would it be called a ramp? Thanks for any help.

The ramp is the angle cut at the bottom back of the barrel lug below the extractor. WC
