Well here's what I know:
Mossberg has put production on hold for now and plan to start production again someday, according to them.
As for the gun it is a very well made although a bit on the heavy side. It has cut checkering, decent looking wood and the metal is a nice blue with a fairly decent metal to wood fit. Mine had what I believe to have been a 42 lb. trigger pull(LOL) and it was a regular 2.5 to 3 inch gun in the accuracy department.
I did a trigger job, recrowned the muzzle and it will do 1.5 inch all the time with sometimes a 1 inch group.
Sometimes you can find these at some of the big box places like Wally World on closeout real reasonable. I have heard some of the guys here reporting them on sale as low as $250.00.
I have one in 30/06 with a rifled 12 Ga Slug Barrel also. The good thing about extra barrels is that the factory supplied forends with them. I like my SSI very much, I just don't hunt with it if I have to walk a lot.

I can concur with the opinion that it's a nice, fairly well put together gun but heavy.

I bought one with the 12 ga. slug barrel a couple years ago and added a 270 barrel/forearm last year. Decent wood, machine checkering; overall both are reasonably nice looking and both shoot well. The 270 doesn't do well unless you really let it cool down between shots (my guess is barrel heat & forend pressure) but it will shoot good 2-shot groups!

I like mine and would recommend one if you're interested in a moderately priced switch-barrel gun. The local Gander mountain has had several on the clearance rack for about a year. They were $299 but I think they're up to $309 or something now. If you've got a Gander Mtn in your neighborhood you might check to see if they've got the same deal or can get one from the Henrietta, NY store. I'd say get one of the clearance priced ones from somwehere before Mossberg starts making them again. They were around $400 or a bit more a couple years ago.

Good luck. -WSJ

Can you offer up some detail on that trigger job. Also, did you leave the auto on safety device there?

They are nice guns for the most part, but they have quirks.

When I bought mine I fully expected to have to do a trigger job on it. I didn't, as it has a nice trigger pull out of the box... except for the fact that it has ZERO over travel. None, zip, nada. My worry is one day a combination of gunk and below freezing temps with make this a problem in the field. Also, my gun is a 12ga slug barrel, and every now and then the extractor will over ride the rim of the
case.
The biggest quirk I've found is that at least with my gun, there is two degrees to which I can close it. If I close it slow, it shuts and will fire safely. But it doesn't seem to be locked up as tight as if I close it smartly. It playing around with it, I found I got better groups if I made sure I closed it smartly every time, as opposed to doing it both ways. So lockup can be inconsistent if you baby it.

Quirks and all, I'd still recommend the gun to anyone interested. It's a heck of a gun for the closeout prices they're going for.

Congrats on your trigger, yours is the only one I have heard that is decent out of the box. Wish mine was.

41 Redhawk
It is fairly easy to do a basic job on the trigger in the SSI if you have a basic familiarity with triggers. The only thing is you will have to get some small clips from the auto parts store(the circle kind you put on and remove with snap ring pliers) because the little copper ones that Mossberg put on will not stay on with any kind of use. All I did was just smoothed up the surfaces (tool marks) and changed the angle just a smidge. DO NOT try to change the angle unless it is something that you have experience with. Usually just removing tool marks will help a lot. Recrowning the 06 barrel will help, at least it did on my rifle. Now I want a 308 barrel for it.

Check with CDNN they have some with shotgun
barrels for $199.99 of course your 01 dealer would have to order it for you so your cost would be a littl more.

If Mossberg does resume production I know of two large dealers who won't buy in again...took them "too long" to move them off the shelves, even at clearance prices.

Initial product rollout some years back was delayed, supposedly, by problems establishing decent accuracy with these. After an initial surge in sales ( due to pent-up demand during the long delay ) the numbers started dropping. Retailers put them on the clearance rack where they sat for months on end. I doubt Mossberg will bring them back if the opinions shared by the two large shops I frequent is common...they won't buy any more for stock.

Some folks are pleased with theirs, but apparently not enough to create further demand...or Mossberg would not have quite making them.

Mine has had major problems since the beginning. For one thing, the firing pin barely reaches the primer, causing misfires. I sent it back to the factory TWICE and got the rifle back in exactly the same condition.

It has about a 50 pound trigger pull with three stages of creep, and shoots, no exageration, a 6-8 inch group at 200 yards.

It's in '06 caliber. I will try to have it recrowned to see if that works, but misfires are not a good thing.
