I just bought a used Ruger #1-B last night. It has a Bushnell 3X9X33 on it now but I'm not a Bushnell fan club member, I'm more of a Leupold fan member. I was thinking of VX-II 2X7X33 and trying to keep a low profile with the smaller bell. I'm now living in NH but do hunt a lot in WV, MD, PA and VT. I'D say that most of my rifle hunting is done in the hardwoods and mountian areas. Do you think this scope selection is too much? not enough? or just right for the gun? Thanks for any help

The scope and rings on there now are just find as far as the eye relief goes, I shoulder the gun and it's there! I can't see anywhere on the ring as to who makes them but I was told that they are Ruger rings. I should look up on the web and try to find out more information on it. Maybe also look into the eye relief of the Bushnell and the Leupold and compare. I was talking to a buddy of mine that said he had trouble on two different scopes with the clarity of the VX-II 2X7X33. He owns two other VX-II 3X9X40 and doesn't have any trouble at all looking thru those. I'll be looking into it a little more the closer I get to actually buying a scope. Thanks

It's a 280Rem. I've got a Reminton 700 Mountian rifle in the 280Rem and love it to death. The mountian rifle is a little lite for the 280 round imo, if you're not paying attention it will bark back at ya I couldn't pass this deal up on a calibier I like! I got it for $450 and there's not a scratch or ding on her. I'll take her out this weekend and see what kind of bark she has.

MKMGOBL, I don't think its too much. I wonder if you'll have enough eye relief with that scope. I used Leupold extension rings with the 3x9x33 and still had to stretch a bit. What rings are those? They might be a little more extended. Best regards, TBP

The average distance for shots in those states , like NY, is probably 50 yds.I use a 1x4 and that's all I need .I'd stick the the 160 gr bullets so as not to ruin too much meat at those short ranges.

What a coincidence...I also just bought a used #1B in .280 Rem. I'm using a Leupold VXII 3-9 because I had one available but hope to get a compact for it soon. They just look better. I see your rifle (like mine) has the black butt pad which means it probably does not have an adjustable trigger. Mine was so bad I replaced it with a Moyers before I even fired the gun. What a difference! I was also surprised to find there is almost no throat in my .280. A 139g Hornady SP seated just off the lands completly fills the neck of the ctg. Heaver bullets (at least in my rifle will protrude into powder area of the case unless I add some throating. Congratulations on your purchase. It's a great rifle and you got a better deal than I did! The trigger isn't bad on it, I think it could be cleaned up a little IMO, seems to be a little slack in it. I thought of taking it up to our gunsmith and see what he can do with it. In the past month my wife and I found these two brother that have their own shop. They both worked and retired from the Ruger plant here in NH. Great guys and they did an awesome triggers job on two other of our guns. Well it turns out the guy who originaly own the #1-B also worked at the Ruger plant and hand picked the stock on this gun. I'm thinking that maybe it does have an adjustable trigger in it, at least I'm hoping it does. I read somewhere that the #1 don't have an adjustable trigger and that the #3 do. I'm new to this gun so I'm not sure. Hope you enjoy your gun as much as I'm going to like mine!...............MK-M-GOBL

Quote: The early production No. 1's had triggers which were easily adjustable for weight of pull and overtravel. The No.3's had the same triggers. i think they stopped making No.3's before they messed up the No.1 trigger design. The current ones have the "adjuistment screws", but they don't seem to actually adjust anything!! They are cosmetic only.

The newer (lawyer inspired) triggers do not have the seer engagement adjustment. The weight of pull and overtravel adjustments "sort of" work but it's the seer engagement that makes all the difference. The Moyers trigger is nothing but a "knockoff" of the origional (pre-lawyer) Ruger trigger. If you remove the buttstock you will be able to see the third adjustment set screw. I hope you get lucky and find one but if not the Moyers is not too difficult to install. Also, the Moyers kit includes a new (much lighter) seer spring that looks exactly like the one in my old Ruger #3. The wood on my #1 280 is not quite as nice as yours but it's close. Lots of figure and very well fitted. Much nicer than the current production #1's for sure. Jon
