A while back some of you helped me with some info on a single shot stalking rifle I picked up. Well now I am thinking of selling it to fund something else and I need help putting a value on it. Here's what I know: It's a Meffert Guild rifle. Underlever, double triggers, auto tang safety, full octagon bbl, 2 leaf sights. It's 9.3x72r. I was told it was made in the 1890's and it is BUG proof marked. The last one of these rifles I saw sell on an auction site went for just under $2700. Here's the kicker though, mine has been refinished. How much should this affect the value? I do not expect to get top dollar for it but would like enough to fund a more practical (for me) replacement. I want something that I will actually hunt with. This is still a great shooter and is as accurate as a sub 6 lb rifle in a moderate caliber can be expected to be. The bore is average for a 100+ year old rifle. It has been suggested to me to put it between $1800-2100 on GB but I really want to avoid auction fees. Pics: Any help would be appreciated.

Anybody? I know with all the fine old rifles I've seen on here someone must have some input...

OK, I'll bite. IMO the $2700 price is a pipe dream caused by the owner's buddy bidding to raise the price. I know 2 folks who do this regularly for one another, and often they end up actually buying each other's stuff! And what's more, amazingly enough they often do it on the regular (non-GunBroker) auction sites that charge 35% in auction fees! Down at the nuke plant where I worked we had a saying, "The stupid will be punished!" and it sure fits the 2 sharks I know, they spend more time trying to cheat folks than My Bride spends at her mirror! Anyway, at the last gun show I attended I saw several guild rifles similar to yours, all priced at or below $2000 and one was far below that price. Your chambering isn't very popular with modern shooters and, in general, break-open rifles command a lower price than solid-frame ones. Claw bases would make it more attractive, as would a different chambering. Sorry to rain on your parade but I think your friends' suggestion may be a little high @ $1800-2100 starting price. IIWY I'd use GunBroker and start it at $1 with a reserve of whatever you think best ($1800-2100?) and NO 'buy it now' price. The low beginning bid will encourage bidders to participate and then the auction fever may well take them over, while the reserve will ensure that you don't take a bath on the price if the auction fever doesn't overwhelm them. Good luck and regards, Joe __________________________ You can lead a human to logic but you can't make him think. NRA Life since 1976. God bless America!

Yeah, like I said I don't expect to get top dollar for it, just looking for what would be a decent price. I have seen a couple sell over $2500 but those had their original finish. Honestly I would be happy to get $1500 out of it. Thanx for the input.

IMO your rifle would be a good value at $1500, anyone that's truly interested should be eager at that price. Wish I could afford it. Regards, Joe __________________________ You can lead a human to logic but you can't make him think. NRA Life since 1976. God bless America!
