I just took possession of one of the Winchester 1885 High walls in 300 H&H the wood is pretty plain but everything else is great. I have a set of Leupold high wall bases and a 3x12x56 Schmidt bender 4x16x50mm scope scope on the shelf. I have wanted a 300 H&H single shot the past 10 years. I am have one being custom build now but there is no end in sight for its completion so this way I can have my cake and eat it too. Will report on how it shoots but I have 8 others and have never had any problems yet, Will call Lee Shaver and have him put a trigger job on it and go hunting.

I got the scope to fit finally the rings from Leupold kept turning in the base and so I had to have them sent another set, then I found that there was no way to get the 56 mm front bell to work, way to high so none of the Schmidt Benders I had on hand wouldn't work nor would the Steiner s or the Doctor optics so I only had one scope low enough to work and its cheap. The wood on the gun is plain and no figure, checking the chamber for over all length show is on the tight side but the trigger isn't bad but will take it down to Lee Shaver in a couple of weeks to be cleaned up. The barrel is way too heavy in fact the whole gun is to heavy for the caliber at about 10.25 pounds with scope and rings but recoil should not be a problem. I do not like the straight grip but will give it a chance before I replace it with a BPCR stock. I have contacted the factory and they have that butt stock on hand so it should be a easy swap out but again it would add more weight, I am very happy with the over all fit and finish of the gun and have ordered another one in 375 H&H so I will have a set, will up date after I have shot it to see how well it will shoots. I have a total of 8 Winchesters in both High and Low wall all of the new type from Japan all the others shoot better than I can.

I'd like to get hold of one of those guns up here, haven't seen any 300's avail this side of the border yet. Strikes me as it would be a nice weight on the 375, sounds a bit heavy for the 300, but, it ought to be nice to shoot at that weight.

I have contacted the local importer of Winchester in my country regarding importing this rifle as well.. never heard back from them.

Will send another mail tommorow.

Since I havn´t seen any photos of this rifle, does it come drilled for scope mounts? It dosent state so on their website. Now, if they would produce a smaller caliber as well for varmints.. I might be finished buying rifles.

What does these cost in the states?

The rifle in question come tapped for scope rings and Leupold bases. But you should know that the same rifle here in the states are chambered in the high wall side 223, 22-250, 243 maybe, 7mm Remington and Winchester short mag and many other as listed on guns America. The starting load that I have worked up for the one I own is 71gr of H4831 and 168gr bullet should run at about 3010fps

Not really sure what is going on with the 1885/B78 at present.
The 1885 was transferred to the Winchester logo for the 45-70's and etc, then Browning renamed it the B78 again and released it for the standard calibers they always had on it, with the round barrels. If you wanted octagon barrels, they were not avail from Winchester in the standard calibers.
Last time I looked on the Browning site, the B78 was gone off it altogether.

I don´t know. Confused
I´m owning two Browning M1885 rifles, a standard and the traditional hunter. I bought both in the mid-90´s, without any problems.
But since a few years, it´s very difficult to get High Walls here in Germany. Only one gundealer imports the Winchester High Wall. At the moment there´re only the limited edition traditional hunter, the 125th anniversary rifle, both in .45-70, and the safari in .375H&H in stock. I don´t know any of the new made Browning M78 rifle, with the ugly round barrel, here in Germany.

Just returned from the range and I am very happy with that starting results, I only loaded 10 rounds to check the chamber and to see if the barrel was going to foul badly or not. the starting load was federal brass with federal primers and 71 grains of H4831 and Berger 155vld bullet (note this power is part of the original powder sold in large metal cases in the early 1960 from Hornaday in Kansas city, Ks, I inhered this from my father in 1985, and has always been stored at about 55 degrees in a dry basement) I placed the Oehler 35p screens up I fired three rounds of older Winchester 180gr factory loads to check there speed and the ran 2895/2910/2850 for the final shot note the last shot sounded different, I ran a brush with bore cleaner down the barrel that ran several patches and found not serous signs of fouling. I had placed no targets down range at this point so the first three shots have no paper group. I fired the first shot with the hand load down range and hit the target low right (thank God for lasers) the speed was 3055fps the scope was changed and the following shot was high and just above the target center its speed was 3100, after making several more correction bullet speeds for the next four shots was 3095/3090/3105/3099 the gun was zeroed at right 1.6 inches above dead center at 100 yards. I fired one shot at the two hundred yard 10 inch round metal target and hit almost dead center(luck I am sure) I placed a new target up and fired the remaining rounds the first two shots cut the same hole and the final shot was a called flyer 3/4 inch away the final group was .900, the gun will shoot but need a cleaner trigger and a lot better scope to see just how well it will shoot the speed of the last three shots was 3100/2995/3110 I am very happy with this starting load and if the accuracy checks out with follow up targets I will do no other load development according to the reloading book I used the pressure is in the low 50000 psi range. Mine is in 45-70 and I cut the barrel to 22" not really losing any velocity with that cartridge . But it made the gun much handier for woods hunting - 8.5 lbs with scope and strap -37" long.
THose guns are just not right with round or round/octagon barrels .

I bought one from CDNN with the octagon barrel. I shot it a couple of weeks ago and loved it. I put a Swarovski 4-12x42 on top. It's heavy, but a pleasure to shoot.

To be honest, I wasn't trying to shoot for a tight group that day. The range was so crowded that I would have mutiple (loud) guns going off just as I was trying to squeeze off a shot. I wanted to know it was sighted in well enough for hunting and try to get grouping later. It was accurate when I could get the shots off the right way.

Finally managed to get one, pd a steep price for it,but, so be it. Wood is certainly not the quality Browning was installing. It is sorta funky, reminds me of plywood. I do believe it will be replaced. Picked up a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44 w/z800 for it. One of these days I may actually get a decent day off to go shoot it.
I like the feel of it being barrel heavy,it settles nicely.
