Never owned one...do they offer them in the longer range calibers like 7mm STW or 7mm Rum,etc? Will they group with the Bolt actions? Thanks,as I like the fact that you can add 4" more barrel and still have the same oal as a bolt gun...."One shot,One Kill" Smiler

To my knowledge they are not offered in the cals you mentioned but 7mm rem mag and .300 Win mag are.

Yes they will shoot as good as a bolt gun but typicly they need just a little tinkering.
Add a hicks convertion or my prefferance do the Seyfried modification and you will overcome any problem that might have given a #1 a bad accuracy rap.

I took my first pronghorn at over 400 yards with my .300 win #1 and several deer between 250 and 300 yards. I ranged a black bear at 254 yds and droped him with one shot.

I do consider a #1 a very good long range rifle.

Akshooter, what is the Seyfried modification? I am currently building a No3 in 330 Dakota.
Cheers, Chris

I've always thought a #1 in something like 25-06 or .264 Win Mag or .257 Weatherby would be an awesome long-range deer, antelope, etc. tool. What you get is the velocity of a 26" barrel in a rifle that's about as handy as a 22 incher.

No doubt Gary Reeder could rebarrel one for you.

As far as accuracy, my Reeder 9,3x73R #1 is a sub-moa rifle.

Rockdoc-
The seyfried convertion dose the same thing as the hicks but is just a whole lot simpler and cheap.
You drill a hole towards the end of the hanger just behind where the forend screw goes in. You use a 6/32 tap and then run a headless 6/32 screw through the hanger and apply slight pressure on the barrel. you can adjust the amount of pressure for best accuracy.

The photo is blurred but hopefully will show enough so you can get the idea.

the STW was offered for a very limited time, but they are rare.

I built a 338 Lapua on one and I have never questioned the accuracy or thought it was subpar to a bolt

Thanks Akshooter, does this make quite a difference to free floating the forend?
Cheers, Chris

Rockdok - yes I prefer this modifycation to free floating for several reasons.

First to freefloat a #1 you will have to remove a lot of wood. If you run this screw in and apply pressure it will pull the forearm away from the barrel and effectivly freefloat the forearm. second unless your barrel is fairly heavy it will probably shoot better with a little pressure applied to the barrel. This convertion not only applys that pressure but makes it adjustable with the turn of a screw.

You could simplify this even more by adding a shim at the tip of the forearm but that would'nt give the advantage of being adjustable like the screw.

Some guys just add a rubber O ring around the forearm screw under the hanger to pull the forearm away from the barrel and again freefloating it. thats probably the simpleist fix and it normally works.

I once tried a shim made from a piece of a penny, and it worked quite well..Thickness was correct, and just epoxied it in place.

The Ruger No.1 is a must own for any rifle nut. My long range No. 1 is a .416 Rigby pushing 300 or 325 gr Barnes at 2900 fps. Mine is factory with a 24" tube and MOA w/o mods. I would go with a custom 30" barrel which would approximate a 26" bolt gun. The .300 H&H is now a standard factory production chambering.

A few # 1 s were made in 300 WBY. I have one of them and it shoots quite well. It has a 26 in barrel. I don't think the Rum will add much effective range

Good thread guys,

Based upon my experiance, the nod would go to the bolt actions for really long range. I probably own at least a dozen Ruger#1's, and I love them all. If I were making a shot over 300 yards I would grab a bolt action rifle everytime.

I do plan on trying to improve my accuracy with the #1.. The #1 is good enough for hunting applications.

Ken Cline- I do own two 7MM STW in #1. the first was one that I had custom built out of an old 458 #1, and the second was the factory offered version in SS. When I go on a hunt I like to bring two guns of the same caliber.

Again I like my #1's but accuracy, at least moa can be a challenge in some calibers.
