I just put a Krieger .405/.411 barrel on my #1 and chambered it to 405 Winchester. I have re-barreled exactly six #1's to-date and all have been rimless cartridges until this 405 job. My problem is that when I close the bolt on a piece of brass the ejector doesn't quite snap under the rim of the case, rather it hangs up on the edge. If I take a small punch and give it the slightest nudge it dropps down and I get a proper over my shoulder eject. If I don't the ejector sort of extracts the brass but leaves it lying in the breach. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can remedy this problem? I'm using all brand new Hornady brass and factory ammo. The extractor was working perfectly when this gun was a 30-338. Thanks for any help, Joe

Check with your gunsmith or call Ruger, I believe there is a slight difference between extractors regarding cartridge head sizes. You may need a different extractor/ejector. I did a barrel change from 7mm Rem Mag to 22-250 and had to change extractors. Also be aware if you have a late model #1 that the safety tang is longer and extends into the feed ramp sometimes preventing complete ejection of rimmed cartridges like 405 Win and 450/400NE 3 in. The leading edge of the safety bar can be easily bobbed off with a Dremel Tool. The old Ruger #1 has a shorter safety and does not stop the brass. Good shooting Tetonka DRSS

I tried to order a magnum ejector from Ruger Inc Canada. The requested the ser#. They new the origional caliber was a 243. They told me that Ruger rules prevented them to send me an ejector for a 257Wby Mag.They said they want to keep their guns origional. So I ordered the ejector from Brownell but they don't have them in stock. The part is now back ordered. I don't know if I ever get one, I don't think Ruger Inc is too happy by getting bypassed by Brownell. Fred M. zermel@shaw.ca

I would call Brownells. If you're good with a file you might could try carefully, VERY carefully filing the ejector a stroke or 2 at a time until it fits. I love the #1.

A long time ago, I ordered 1 ejector of each size from Ruger so I would have the for projects. To date, I haven't had to change any. The last swap I did was a 300 H&H on a 25-06 varmint gun, and the ejector worked flawlessly with no changes. The pop-over ejector is pretty forgiving. What is less forgiving is the fit of the ejector in the action. My guess is that the ejector cut in the new barrel is a bit tight and just slightly binding the ejector unless forced. I have also found that the newer ejectors do't fit into the very old (pre 80) guns. They seem to be thicker and would need to be fitted before they can be installed.

Both obvious possible issues have been addressed. I would first measure the thickness in the rims. If the 405 win is thicker than the previous chambered cartridge then I would simply file down the face of the extractor so that is automatically pops into place when the action is closed. If however the rim thicknesses are the same then I would look for other interferences such as extractor cut out or other possibilities. My guess would be difference in rim thickness. Good luck.
