Last weekend I picked up a #3 in 223 for less than the value of the scope mounted on it (Leupold 3.5-10 VariX 3 Tactical). Since I won't have much in it, if anything, after I sell the scope I'm considering spending the money to have a short carry rifle made. I can't think of anything better than a #3 6 TCU with a 18-20" medium barrel and a light scope such as a Leupold 3-9 Compact. What do you think of such a project?

TOP I like the caliber choice. If you can stand a leupold 2.5-8 you'll have a more comfortable eye relief although the scope is a bit heavier. Good luck, TBP

After selling the scope and shooting it with iron sights, I decided to stay with the 223 and switch to a receiver sight. I have a CZ 527 (223)with a 2-7 Leupold Compact so the scoped light rifle concept is already covered. I plan to have the receiver drilled and tapped and mount a William Foolproof rear sight and an Ashley post front sight. It will probably be the rifle that is in the pickup most of the time.

Project complete! Had the Foolproof sight installed along with a .080 AO front sight. This sight setup is very easy and quick to use in most light conditions. It will consistently shoot 1.25" groups with the ammo worked up for my CZ527 so there is no need to have two sets of 223 loads setting around. Total cost of the rifle - $65. This rifle will be with be a lot.
