I have been helping a hounds-man with wild hog/boar removal from private ranching in my off time [lol]. I have been carrying and old sawed off to 20 inch H&R from the 80s 12 gauge with DDpleks Hexolit 32 Magnum 495 grain slugs. My question is two fold. 1).What one of the new slug guns from H&R 1871 has the action that can have replacement RIFLE barrels added to it? 2).Is this considered a rifle or a shotgun? I want the shortest barrel possible for the manzanita and white-thorn scrub I am shooting the wounded animals in.

The only rifle barrels that H&R will add to any shotgun frame are 357 and 44 mags, and then only to SB1 frames, 10ga and 12ga Slug gun frames(SB2 shotgun) can only be fitted with 10ga based barrels. They'll only fit all other rifle barrels to SB2 rifle frames made 2000 and later as stated on their website, barrel lengths of available barrels are shown there also. . http://www.hr1871.com/support/accessoryprogram.asp

Cal H&R for information about your frame. You can check the FAQs at Graybeards outdoor forums for the date of manufacture by serial number. The moderator at Graybeard's can also answer all your questions. It looks like your frame can have a 24" rifled shotgun barrel added only if it is mfg in 1987 or later. You gun barrel is considered a 12 ga therefore it is a shotgun. I would not ever risk trouble with the BAT men for 2 inches of barrel. If you want it really short apply to have it registered as a sawed off shotgun and pay the $250 tax.

Anyone use one of these cut to 18 or 18.5 inches? I used a smoothbore 20 gauge with one of those DD slugs yesterday to finish a 185 pound boar. Rushing at 15 feet it was easy with that 18 1/8 inch barrel, but sometimes need a lil range that the rifled barrel will give

I have tried those slugs in my 870 that carries a 16" smooth bore and they will throw a 4-5 inch group at 75 yards, which is the limit on where we hunt in the swamps for hogs, I have never had a smooth bore type slug do well in a rifled bore, but noticed in slug guns there realy is a big difference from gun to gun. Not disagreeing or trying to be contentious 4759, just asking for info...has the tax stamp for sawed-off shotguns gone up to $250? Or was that just a "typo"? When I got my Ithaca Auto & Burglar gun a decade or so ago, it was $200...and had been the same amount since 1934. (Edited to add: I had both a single barreled and a double-barreled U.S. factory-made shot pistol. The more I think about it, the more I believe the Auto & Burglar gun might have been the single-shot. Can't remember the name of the other one, so can't look up the specs at the moment.) Anyway, it was a great piece for killing quail in the local orchards and, being double-barreled, a pretty good close range defense gun too carried with a shot load in one barrel and a slug in the other. For those not familiar with that gun, here are the specs: Ithaca Auto & Burglar Gun Type Shotgun Place of origin United States Service history Used by Bank guards, police, messengers, home defense Production history Manufacturer Ithaca Gun Company Produced 1922 - 1933 Number built approx. 4,000 Specifications Weight 2 kg (4.5 lbs) Length 406mm (16 inches) Barrel length 317mm (12.5 inches) or 257mm (10.1 inches) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Caliber 20 gauge, 28 gauge Action Break-action The Auto & Burglar Gun was a US-made factory-built handgun.
