Sorry if I opened up can of worms, but I have been looking at buying a single for mule deer here in Utah. I have narrowed the caliber down to either 25.06, .270, or .308. My question is in which platform. I have shouldered all three and all three would suite me from that stand point. Is there any reason to buy one over the other? It seems that the #1 and TC have a bigger following with more aftermarket stuff. Not interested in multiple barrels w/ TC but it still fits fine. exposed hammer? $ is not that big of deal either.

Thanks,

One thing to consider, if you do much of it, is that the break action rifles are more awkward on a shooting bench or prone.

Another is ejectors (#1) vs extractors (TC-NEF).

I prefer the Winchester '1885 action, as I have had Ruger #1s that have had the actions opened while walking thru brush and getting the locking lever pulled open easily, and dropping a round on the ground just as a big buck ran out of the brush. I also dont trust safeties with one in the chamber, much prefering a hammer to pull back before firing. And I find break open actions awkward. This leaves the High wall action that the Winchester uses. But, that's just my choice, and my reasons. They are all good guns. Take your pick, and enjoy!

If you're not looking for extra barrels for different calibers, ( shame )
Then I would pass on the TC. Part of what you're paying for on the TC is that interchangeability of barrels and calibers.

If money isn't the primary concern, I would go with the Ruger #1. If money is a primary consideration, then go with the NEF.

My choice for me would be the TC, because I DO want the interchangeability of barrels and calibers. I have a Contender and have had it for years. I love it, but that's me, and not you. I've never really been a fan of the #1's myself, just never "did it" for me. My last choice would be the NEF. Yeah, I know, they shoot. But Eeker DAMN! that's an ugly gun!

I would look real hard at the Ruger #1A in 270. I have one in 7X57 and it is an excelent rifle.
Shoots great and is vry easy to carry.
The #1B has a 26 inch barrel while the 1A is only 22. But 22 is long enough. You would not lose much velocity and the handyness of the little !A is hard to beat !

If I were to buy one from the choices you've listed, and I didn't care about interchangeable barrels, I'd go with the Ruger.

If money were no object, I might look closely at the Dakota, Blaser, or Merkel single shots though.

(I went with the Encore, but I like changing barrels and I like the stock set up on them)
