I've used Fed., Win., & Rem. 45-70 brass for years but since Starline 45-70 brass (from Graf&Sons) was about $10 cheaper per #100 I decided to give them a try.
What a Surprise! Every case mic's within +_ .001" of 2.10" in length and the rim thickness only varys from .66" to .69". This is the most uniform 45-70 brass I've ever had. I have not weighed them yet but unless there are some surprises I'll be ordering another 100 tomorrow. Go Starline!

Who doesn't? I don't reload, but I keep the brass because it seems a shame to throw it away... well, that, and someday, I will reload.

Ag... When you become a fully committed gun nut and start re-loading you will appriciate the consistency of quality brass like Starline. Also, you will never know how accurate your gun really can be until you tailor some ammo just for it. And DO hang on to those empties. The price of brass and jacketed bullets is going up like crazy!

You know you're a gun nut when you're picking up brass for a caliber you don't own yet -- or saving brass for a caliber you don't reload.

"Damn it! Look at that brass! I'm getting that rifle!"

Starline is great brass. The only caution is that it tends to be hard, so it is recommended that the necks be annealed prior to the first use. Not a criticism, mearly a comment that will help prolong brass life and improve performance.

Aglifter,
You need to start loading.....
You can never be a truly certified gun nut shooting factory ammo. There is nothing more fun than wearing a rifle out.... or at least trying to.

I am waiting on my first .45-70 so I'll need to buy some brass. Starline is a contender, but how does its capacity compare with Winchester?

Brent:

Winchester brass does have a greater case capacity but the brass, in my experience, is of exceptionally poor quality. Remington, while of somewhat lesser volume is much better brass.

Howsomever, the fact of the matter is that the previous posters are right: The best brass available in the .45-70 and the longer .45s is Starline. The concentricity and dimensional variations are so small it is hard to believe, and the flash holes are done when you get them.

Get the Starline and you will still be able to respect yourself in the morning. If you need more capacity just step on the powder harder. That's what they make compression dies for.

Thanks Glenn,
To think I just, by virtue of serendipity, bought 333.3 cases of .45-90 for my "new" 77 Sharps that the UPS tracking system says was delivered 10 minutes ago, all makes me feel very good.

So, now some more in the minie .45 caliber.

For a decade I had only a .45-100. Now I have a 2.1, a 2.4 and my old 2.6...

Tomorrow the .38 shoots too. Too many rifles, too little time...

Dude!

Thy cup runneth over! How much is weighing the '77?

Just trim the new cases to length, size the ones what got dented and you are ready to rock.

So you finally got the handle back on the .38? Keep me posted on that one, as I have a certain propietary interest...

Oh she is a beauty!!!! She weighs just under 13# A full 2# heavier than my #3 Shiloh. She also has at least 1" less drop. Not quite so straight as your Wesson, but way better than what I was using. Sweet!

I don't know if she will be ready before Lodi but she might.

BTW, I have seen no entry forms yet. You?

I look forward to seeing it. Bring it along even if you ain't got it playing nice yet. I assume it is an Axtell rifle. Remind me to tell you a couple Carmen stories, particularly the one about he rattlesnake...

I have no invite for the match yet either. I never know if I am going to get one. <g> I'll axe around and see if they are out yet.
