That's traditionally a BP cartridge like the 50-70 and both are considered to be obsolete. Unless you are going to compete in long range 1,000 yard buffalo style matches (BP competition only) I think your not going to be able to use that extra case capacity. You will be forced to use reduced loads of smokless which can get one into trouble as pressures can be very erratic(also affects accuracy). Starline would be your best source for 50-110 brass if you go that route (about $1.20 case).

The 45-70 makes much more sense if you are using smokeless powder and in a Browning you don't have to go the custom route.

Your money and most certainly, your choice...

retired jeff,
hope I did'nt catch you napping,I need one every lunch hour!
I presently shoot 45-70,90 & 110 all in smokeless, takes more work & the learning curve was kind of long, but I just enjoy working with the old obsolete calibers & just wanna try my hand at the big 50.

They usually happen about 2-3 times after dinner while I'm drinking coffee. Usually spill the coffee once a week, and the snoring keeps waking me up.

I completely understand your intent. I shoot a couple of obsoletes myself. 50-70 in a 2nd Allen Springfield TD (1866), 43 Span in a Rem RB (1879), and 43 Mauser in a 71-84 Mauser(1888). All of these are BP loads. My Sharps is 20th Century so I shoot both white & black in the 45-70 (mostly BP).

Hello there
I shoot a 50-90 in a newer C.Sharps and I loaded white powder to go to africa with it. It kicks out a 450gn Barnes original at 1910fps. the case is filled to max cace capacity with IMR4350, this is the only way I could make this work, as reduced loads were inconsistent if they lit up at all.

Sharps Shooter,
thanks for posting, the 50-110 win case is slightly shorter & might make it a little easier to re-load,I shoot a 45-110 & with reduced lods,I use filler(PSB) WITH N-135 WITH VERY CONSISTENT results, for a full case,I am trying acc 3100.another powder that works well without filler is acc5744

Get yourself a copy of, "The Legacy of Lever Actions" from Wolf Publishing in Prescott. They publish Rifle, and Handloader Magazines. You can get their phone number from one of their magazines and order over the phone.

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

I shoot a Kerr SXS in 50-110, both cast and the Barnes 300 grainer w/ 32 to 35 grains IMR4198, which appears to be THE powder. There's not really a lot of info on this cartridge around, and most that is published, dwells on the 500 grain bullets which makes it a 50-90. The 50-110
shot the lightweight bullet for the higher velocity, making it an Express round. ~Arctic~

I own two, an 1886 Winchester with a 30"bbl and full magazine, and a HiWall. I would hardly consider the cartridge obsolete, as brass is being made these days by StarLine. 400gr Barnes @1750fps is enough to kill anything you hunt. I killed a 2100+lb bison bull at 217yds with one shot, clean thru, broke the front shoulder and two ribs and exited. Don't need much more than that; they didn't 120 years ago in Alaska or Canada for moose and big BIG!!! bears.
