The trials and tribulations of making brass for the little Martini 17 Javalina [Rimmed]

I thought all my nefarious plans had taken a shit when I collapsed the shoulder on the very first case [Bertram] I tried. Oh PHUCK!! Not to be disheartened I went to the bathroom and, amid a "World Class" evacuation, which, at my age , is a major event thought about the problem. At about the third verse of "Flight of the Valkeries" it dawned on me. DUMMY!! Size the new Bertram in the 222 Remington die first. DUH! Doing this it enabled me to use the 221 Fireball FL sizer sans the expander to shove the shoulder back the required distance to get the case into the chamber AFTER necking it down to .17 with the little tool from Bullberry. Then neck size it with the 17 Mach $ [17 Fireball], load with 5.0 grs Bullseye and an el- cheapo Midway bullet and bingo!! A 17 Javalina Rimmed. Now I will find a 222 Remington F.L. Sizer and lop about .180 off the bottom and have a good sizer that should [?] size the cases down and shove the shoulder back to the correct length. All in all an interesting morning.
Aloha, Mark

A splendid little cartridge!

I get great results by first annealing the necks, then beginning the neck-down process in a 30 Luger die, then the other dies, and finally a neck-turning and trim.
Regards, Joe

Do you have 17 javelina dies? or are you making do with what you have. What about useing 357 max brass as a basis?

That's what I used, 357 Maximum brass. LOTS better quality than Bertram.

Hi DW,
Came across a pair of Posa rings at a pawn shop the other day. The guy had no idea what they were so I stole them for 40.00. I put on an old B&L and dialed it in and got decent groups with the new brass and Hornady 20 gr bullets in spite of the chemo shakes. I`m guessing about 3300 fps and unhappy crows. The scope sits too high for me so I will try and put on some lower bases and a better scope. All in all a VERY enjoyable gun to shoot. NO recoil to speak of~~ accuracy in the 5/8"-3/4" 110 yd target and, like I said~~ UNHAPPY crpws.
Aloha, Mark
