i own a " uberti-italy" sharps 74. i like this almost as much as i thought i would. this rifle is a 45/70 serial sh283**. the 34 inch barrel is half oct. and half round.

taking this apart i see that the block is actually bigger then the ruger no1 i used to own in 270 win. the only diff i see is where the hammer is in configuration to the bore.

question is how strong is it? i would like to run loads thru it from the marlin and winchester 95 and 86 loading charts that yeild around 40,000 psi if memory serves.

is this action strong as it looks? im not wanting to load for the ruger area but would like to try some of the 95 marlin loads in it.

what do ya think? im gonna post this same question on the gunsmith corner here as well.

I have the same 74 sharps but made by Pedersoli and it's only rated at 29,000 psi with a full oct. barrel 34" long in 45/70. I would double check the pressure rating before trying the 95 loads chart, I would say the action would give before you saw any pressure signs but I'm not sure. I've used loads near 29,000 cup with no problems or pressure signs but don't want to go any higher just for the fact I'm not sure what I would see first, pressure signs or broken gun.

Shiloh Sharps says theirs are "...as strong as a HiWall..." for what that is worth. You will be much happier (and safer) buying a High Wall Winchester replica if you want to go high pressure.
