I got one of these three weeks ago for a #1 and am skeptical that is it very solid on the gun. It seems to fit very poorly and I can wiggle it with my hands if I try. Seems like the windage screws are not parallel to each other and the tigher you make them the more they bend and the less stable the whole thing gets. maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Sounds like something is wrong. Mine has not arrived. I had a similar problem with a scope mount, the scope mount was simply cut wrong and when it was replaced all worked well. Do you have a scope mount and does it fit securely?
Scope rings fit perfectly, but on a 458 I really don't have use for a scope and want to use a peep. It seems like the main issue is that the "tab" that extends vertically into the rib (all Ruger rings mounts have it) is a few thou too big on the peep and won't let the peep settle completely flush with the rib. I may try to file it, but I guess for $80 I thought I wouldn't have to do any custom work to it.

I also have a 458 No 1 that the peep will me mounted. I discussed with Ruger at the Dallas Safari Show and they asked me to contact Chris Peters in customer service 603 863 3253. Also suggest I use a micrometer to measure scope mounts and bases to ensure both are accurate. I'm not a gunsmith and would not try to file it, I'd just make a mess.
I have a NECG sight on my No 1 .45-70. I had to open the aperture and drill out part of the frame of the sight to get the large ghost ring aperture that I like. Otherwise it's a functional sight, but it is butt-ugly. It's made in Germany by Rechnagle, I believe.

I put one of these sights (NECG) on a #1 a few years ago. It was so simple that I "knew" I wouldn't need to refer to the instructions. Nope, until I read them and then installed and tightened the screws in the order specified, I simply couldn't get the sight straight and tight. If I remember correctly, the order in which the screws were tightened was the issue.
Leupold makes a VX III, 32mm scope in 1.5x to about 6x. I have this on a No. 1 in 45/70 Govt. for dense woods, Roosevelt elk. Heavy duplex reticle, at 1.5x it's a lot faster than a peep sight.
