Or at least a good start I have been shooting a #1~B with a Douglas barrel in .405 since 03. It doesn't much like the Hornady 300gr bullet (which falls apart too easily for my taste anyway). It does like the 400gr Woodleigh softpoint, but that bullet is a bit pricey and perpetually in "Out of inventory" mode with most suppliers. Recently I called Beartooth Bullets in Idaho and the very helpful and knowledgable fellow there offered to size a 375gr LFN/gc .416 bullet to .412. IMHO This may be an ideal bullet for the .405 in a single shot. I used Hodgdon's load data for the Woodleigh and was rewarded with 1 3/4" groups at 100yds and velocities right at 2,000 fps. I'm betting groups will shrink with more trigger time and this load should KO most anything I'll ever hunt at about 1/4 the cost of the Woodleigh.

The 405 Winchester gets better looking every time I turn around. Thanks for the details.
