CDNN has the Win. Low Wall in 17 M2 for sale for $600. Other than redoing the breech block to centerfire and rechambering, does anyone know if the conversion to 17 Bee or 17 Hornet is feasable? I don't have any info on twist rate, etc. Also would the Browning low wall centerfire breechblock fit? I think they are just a case of badge engingeering as we call in the motorcycle world. Same critter, diferent color stripes. Thanks for any info and if anyone has done it, how did it work out? Thaine "Begging hands and bleeding hearts will always cry out for more..." Thaine, You are correct, the current Winchester line of 1885's are almost identical to the now discontinued Brownings...actually all made by Miroku in Japan, for both companies. I'm not positive, but I have a strong feeling that the blocks will interchange. However, a knowlegeable gunsmith (one who has rebuilt a BUNCH of Brownings) told me once that all you had to do was change the firing pin and bushing to convert the breechblock from center to rimfire. And, the necessary extractor changes...which will no doubt mean a new extractor cut in the barrel shank, along with rechambering...any way you slice it it's going to be quite a project. Greg

Thanks Greg. I've looked at both the Win and Browning parts catalog and while the Browning used a bushing, the Win breech block is different. No bushing and different method for retaining the firing pin. So, unless the brech blocks would interchange ($146 for centerfire) I doubt if that is an option. The old low walls were converted quite often and they usually put a bushing in and used a new firing pin. That was even done to some centerfires to enable reduction in pin tip size. The old extractor could be used since I am going to a larger case diameter, and a simple rechamber would be all that is needed to the barrel. Thaine, it seems odd that the factory would change the way they build those breechblocks...too easy to just have different firing pins and bushings, and only have one part number for the breech blocks...but since when do gun manufacturers do anything that we think makes sense! Sure sounds like a neat conversion, if you can pull it off. I'd recommend you give Mike Lewis, of Walden, Colorado a call...he's worked on a LOT of Brownings, and might have some insight for you. I used to have his contact info, but seem to have lost it, sorry. Maybe someone will chime in with a phone or email address. Greg

Thanks Greg, I'll try to find his # via the good ole net. I agree that it seems strange, but there is a distinct difference in te parts listings for the two. I'll try to get my hands on a rimfire this week while in San Antonio and see if there is a bushing in the block. It would sure make life easier.
