it would be a simple operation to run a ultramag reamer into a 300 win mag chamber. don't worry about the #1 it is one of the strongest actions out there

Weve been through this before on here. Someone a few months ago reamed out a .300 Win mag to ultra mag. At the time I cautioned about the screw holes on the quarter rib beeing deep. He had checked it out and in this case it was ok.

A gunmaker frind of mine in Germany set out to rebore and rechamber a #1 300 Win to 10.3x60R for a Swiss client. In that case the holes were too deep and he had to rebarrel.

In your case all this is moot since you want a longer barrel than the 26" that the Ruger comes with.

I've been thinking about making a Mauser with a tapered barrel and found CNC Barrel Works ( cncbarrelworks.com ). I don't know how their work is, but the prices seem reasonable. You may want to check them out before you rule out having an octagonal barrel on your build.

Why? For a 100 fps?
I once punched out a fine Belgian Browning from 30-06 to .308 Norma and got only nominal velocity increase. Oh, yes it is fun to "pop" out a rifle, But.....Isn't .300 Win satifactory?

Personally, I can't quite figure out why they don't chamber it for their own Super Whomper 375 or 416...

Ha!...Rich, you'll be happy to know they do chamber their #1 in the .375 Ruger... Big Grin
I image they'll get around to chambering it in the .416 Ruger also but you'll probably have to wait a bit on that one.. double Big Grin

100fps increase? You will get more then that going from a Win Mag to an Ultra Mag. Add the 32" barrel and it will be rather significant.

I often wondered the same thing. Why no 7mm 300 338 or 375 Rums?

The reason you haven't seen it is perhaps the typical buyer of a #1 isn't usually a fanboy of the latest gunrag caliber of the month?

Seriously. After all, it is offered in 7X57 and 300 H&H but not gee whiz 300 Superdouperultrashortremchesterugermagnum.

The No. 1 can be rebarreled to anything up to the 500 Nitro Express or more, even.

No worries mate. It would be difficult to come up with an action stronger than the No.1 - same principle as artillery. It is a business decision that Ruger didn't chamber RUM not engineering.
