Just picked up my new 22 Hornet today and love it! I have a Leupold M8-4x to throw on it, but with the low Weaver rings its mounted in the rear scope bell bumps into the top of the hammer. I was considering filling the top edge of the hammer down for clearance, it doesn't need very much taken off for the scope to fit down all the way. The easy answer is to just get higher rings. But I would like to keep the scope mounting as low as possible, and also I'm a little poor right now and filling and sanding is free, new rings are not. I dont have a hammer extention yet but was also wondering if the extention will still fit on the hammer properly if I do any filling?

I bought some Hornady factory ammo loaded with 35g. V-Max, listed on the box at 3100fps. I bought a "complete load book for 22 Hornet" and it lists a recipe for 12.3g. of H110 max w/35g. vmax for 3060fps. It was by far the fastest load in the book and the only one with 35g. bullets, all the other loads started at 40g. bullets. Anyone ever have luck with this load? Or maybe you could throw out your favorite Hornet load, I will be getting dies soon.

Thanks from a happy new NEF owner.

I know you don't want to hear this..... but higher rings is the route to go.

It sounds like you have the scope base already.

How much more room do you need so the hammer clears the scope?

Since you have Weaver rings now, I assume that's what you want to stick with..... here they are. Note the different heights available.
Weaver Rings

You'll probably also want the hammer extension.

Keep in mind that if you modify the hammer, you are voiding the H&R service policy and they will refuse service for free. I'd go with a little higher rings or try to move the scope forward or back just a little to clear the hammer if the power ring is where the interference is. I've got over a dozen Handis and sportsters and use Burris Signature Zees on all but 1 of em, mediums work most of the time but some have highs on them due to differences in scope power ring/ocular bell size. Medium Burris Sig zees are .270" tall and the highs are .420" tall, if that is any help to compare ring heights so you know how much difference you need. The Optic Zone has the best price of $27.99 plus $4.25 shipping on these rings. Jon's web site is down at the moment for an upgrade but I'm sure you can call him...

I'll probably just go get those Burris rings, I don't really like Weaver rings because of the tendency to cant the scope when you tighten the rings on the scope. But I'm still not sure if I need the medium or high rings? It's a fixed 4x scope so there is no power ring to get in the way. It's just too bad that NEF didn't change the design on the hammer slightly. If they would have just gave it a little different curved shape to the hammer then you could get away with low mounts.

Thanks,

Redrider.

High rings are the only way to go.
Will the side hammer that Uncle Mike's sells work?

I put my Leupold M8-4X in high Burris Zee rings with the Uncle Mikes hammer extention. That all fits and works great, but..............

But I am having extractor problems allready!!! Dang it!!! The first time it happeneed at home using an allready fired case as a snap cap. I dry fired on the empty a few times and then it was stuck, wouldn't extract. Then it happened twice more when I took it out to sight it in, thats three times in less than 50 rounds.

How do I polish the chamber??? That is what I have read to do on these boards. Or should I send it back to NEF??? What should I expect from thier service dept.??? Should I tell them to send me back a gun that extracts, that only sounds reasonable to me.

Besides, if I have to send it in that will be a good excuse to get the 45-70 barell fitted. and maybe a 243 at the same to as well.

Please help!!!

The failures to eject are the reason H&R is switching over to all extractors. You can fix the problem with a chamber polish. Use a bore mop with a patch wrapped around it, add the tip section of a 3 piece rod to it and chuck it in a drill, apply JB Bore compound, Flitz, Maas, Simichrome or any fine metal polish and smooth up the chamber with a couple minutes polishing adding more polish every 30 seconds or so. Another way is to deprime a spent case and insert a screw in in, cut the head off and chuck that in a drill with some polish on it. After the polish job, clean the chamber and ejector housing real well and make sure you wipe the chamber after cleaning before shooting. After doing a chamber polish, I have yet to have a FTE that wasn't my fault for not wiping the chamber after cleaning at the range.

Using a spent case as a snap cap will jam the case into the chamber from the hammer pounding the case forward, does it everytime if you do it much, even in a polished chamber, but it beats breaking the firing pin or transfer bar when dry firing.

Good info, wrongtarget!

I had extraction problems with my .308 Handi. Chamber mop, JB, cleaning rod section & drill. Does the trick!

Wrongtarget, even if shotgun barrels count, you still have more Handi barrels than I do! I'm going to have to correct that situation! Wink

I would REALLY like one in .22 K-Hornet! Guess I'll have to get fit with the regular .22 Hornet barrel first..... then ream it to the K- Hornet.
