Concho:

In my .45-70, I use Remington cases annealed before each loading and trimmed, Winchester standard large rifle primers, 67 grains of Goex Express compressed 0.20 inches, a .060 Walters overpowder wad, and a PJ Minigrove 535-grain bullet cast 20:1, sized to .458, and lubed with Sagebrush blackpowder lubricant. In my Adobe Walls model rolling block in .45-70, this load shoots about 1-1/2 minutes of angle out beyond 500 meters.

You can do it with drop tube and compression. Different bullets allow different amounts of powder too.

Thanks Brent ! I have several sizes of bullets for my 45 cal rifles from 520 to 390 Gr. a drop tube was used ! I had to compress 3 times to load the brass with that amount of powder , and then over a .400 crush when loading a 405 Gr.NBC co. bullet in 45/90 Brass , so how does he do it with 45/70 ? I also tried to find the Paul Jones Minigrove bullet but it is not listed at their site , a 535 gr is listed but not minigrove as loud-n-boomer states for the name of the bullet . I just need more facts for this loading . Thanks concho

You might look for Monogroove. I don't shoot that sort of bullet, but it might be the correct name.

Meanwhile, I'm in the midst of loading 79 gr of Goex into a .38-72 and I put 107.5 of Swiss 1fg in a .45-100 and 105 gr of Goex Exp 2fg in a .45-90. My bullets are 320 gr for the .38 and 550 for the .45s. You can do this with a bullet that is either a partial or a full bore rider and whatever compression it takes. Sometimes a lot. You MUST use a compression die to do it. But it should be quite easy to get 67 gr in a .45-70.

Okay, I understand. Yeah, compression is common in bp. We use dies that can be found at www.buffaloarms.com. I just got done making two loads for the .45-90 that have 0.375 and 0.400" of compression.

Go to this page and get the compression plug and a die body (Lyman M die).

If you want some good sources of help on loading bp cartridges, http://bpcr.net/forum/index.php.

Concho42:

If you want to try the PJ bullets without buying the mold, Sagebrush products sells them precast, lubed and sized (www.sagebrushproducts.com). Wendy and Harlen Sage, the owners of Sagebrush, are both serious blackpowder cartridge rifle competitors, and are also very easy to deal with. I have ordered quite a bit from them, and have had the pleasure of meeting/competing against them several times.

The lube I use is referred to on their web site as Sagebrush Alox Bullet Lube. I use SPG lube as well, and have heard great things about White Lightnin lube.

The PJ Minigrove is a borerider design, and I seat it with a couple of groves out of the case, since I am only using it for a target bullet, and am careful not to get dirt into my bullet boxes. As Brent has suggested, I use a powder compression die as well.

A good website with lots of information on loading for and shooting blackpowder cartridge rifles is the Shiloh Rifle user's forum at http://www.shilohrifle.com/forums/. Caution, that site will make you want to buy a Shiloh Sharps to go with your roller.
