In the bolt action vs single shot discussion below, JD posted a picture of a beautiful low wall with close coupled double set triggers. I have use the regular variety double sets but don't understand how these work. Would someone enlighten me? I used to have the single shot bug real bad, got over it, bought a couple of bolt actions and now it's comimg back with a vengance. I have to have either a 22 lr or hornet or both in a low wall. DW

DW:

The so called close coupled double set trigger is the original DST offer by Winchester in their Single Shot. The more conventional DST was a later offering and was referred to by Winchester as the Schuetzen DST.

The close coupled trigger is set by pushing the rear trigger forward. It is a good set trigger, certainly equal to the Schuetzen triggers.

Mr. Steele preformed some alchemy or lunar sacrifices or some such to get that trigger in a low wall. (Personally, I expect the latter as Mr. Steele is the only man alive that actually understands how the Winchester single set trigger works. He could not have come into such knowledge honestly...)The tang of the flat side low wall is dimentionally different than the high wall and the standard DST of either variety does not fit. The action he shows was only offered with a single trigger or the single set trigger.

Regards,

Glenn

Thanks, I appreciate your helping me wrap my mind around the close coupled trigger. There are a couple of people on here that I think use Alchemy to get guns that look as good as they do. I can't seem to do it on my own. DW

Midnight....crossroads.....full moon.....black cat.....boiling cauldron.....three witches.....scary, ain't it?

The pictured CCDST is a conversion performed by the late Ben Rice on one of my low wall custom tangs about 20 yrs ago now. Ben was one of the good guys, a true craftsman who made aftermarket Winchester wall parts and sold them for a VERY reasonable price.

The advantage of the CCDST is that the original single-trigger lever can be retained while the wide-spaced Schuetzen DST requires a larger lever. The disadvantage of the CCDST is that the shooter must remove one hand from the rifle in order to set the kicker trigger while the Schuetzen DST can be operated with both hands remaining on the rifle.

These days it's not impossible to fit CCDSTs to an existing tang but would require some fairly expensive parts & labor. Ben Rice is no longer with us, unfortunately, but I still have a very few parts for the various Winchester set triggers.

Glenn is too modest; he himself has fit a set of CCDSTs to one of his walls, perhaps even the same rifle he used to win the Nationals a while back.
Regards, Joe
