I recently purchased an H&R 1871 Buffalo Classic rifle in 45-70. When firing at 100 yards, I got two distinct 1.25 inch groups spaced about 2 inches apart vertically. I've heard this might be because of the way the fore end fastens to the barrel. Right now a screw goes up through the fore end and threads into a nut dovetailed to the underside of the barrel. How can I free-float the fore end and would it help? Tom P.

A neoprene "O"ring placed on the barrel stud will float the forend. I use one that is 9/16"ODx7/16"IDx3/32" thick. Also, placing the front bag under the barrel pivot(hinge) will sometimes help with accuracy when shooting from a bench. Sent you a PM.
