Will be building a Ruger No. 1 as a casual target rifle. calibers underconsideration include 6.5 MS and .303 British. (PacNor barrels. I will be using a Globe front sight with level and will need a clasic type steel receiver sight peep. Does anyone have any suggestions on a rear sight. Thanks Elmer.

I looked at the New England sight but will not be having the rib on the new barrel. I am looking to see if some has installed some form of target rear sight on a ruger. such as an older redfield or parker hale. etc. thanks Elmer.

If you could get one to look at you might see if something like a Lyman 66 could be adapted. I believe they are designed for a flat sided receiver.
Years ago I put a Williams on a #3 but I think it mounted on the scope base holes--I could be confused with a Browning 78.
Another thought would be to see if the mounting face of Lyman or Redfield sights could be milled to fit.
Something like this could probably be adapted:

A receiver sight will end up pretty far from the eye. Not the best setup. Some of the old target sights for the Stevens 417 Walnut Hill had a base on the receiver and an extension which brought the peep one or two inches further back. There were also many such, by Marble Goss and Vaver typically, for the Winchester 52. The base was of course concave to fit the bolt gun receiver, but it ought not to be beyond the wisdom of mankind to adapt one to a flatside.

Paul Shuttleworth of CPA makes a sight extension as described, for using a Redfield target receiver sight on a singleshot...attaches to the rear scope block. Looks a bit odd, but should be very effective.

Not bad, better than to d&t the receiver, and will detach for scope use.

Overall this is about the biggest selection I know of. There are all sorts of things to browse through, especially the Ukrainian reproductions:

Elmer, take a look at this year's (2006) Gun Digest article on the No. 1 in .32/40. The guy built a custom tang sight for it-cool application!

I recall that some of our Canadian friends were using long slide Lymans on # 3 Rugers in the 80's for long range shooting(45-70) in their Dominion of Canada matches. With fine results too.
