How light could a Ruger #1 with a 26" light contour barrel and custom stock with minimal wood (british style)chamberd in 5.6x50R be made.Less scope and bases. What would it weigh? Allen It's a Mauser thing, you wouldn't understand.

I have a Ruger #1 with a lightweight barrel and fairly short forearm that weights approximately 7 to maybe 7.5 pounds. My barrel is only 20" as it came off a Remington M7. The Ruger action has quite a bit of weight as is, so I'd guess, if your barrel is light enough, you'b be at least at 7.5 pounds, give or take. Paul B.

Which model or version of Ruger #1 is the lightest? And has the smallest barrel contour. In any caliber. It will be rebarreled and I want the smallest barrel channel in forarm. Allen It's a Mauser thing, you wouldn't understand.

For one thing the caliber does not need a 26" light barrel 24" is more than adquate. I you remove the 1/4 rib and Ruger rings and replace them with Weaver base and light weigth rings you can easy loose more than 1 lbs. A light weight scope like a 3-9 Sightron or a 2-8 Leupold will take off another 1/2 lbs. Bore out the stock and fore arm for another 5 oz. I have done this with two of of my #1. I will rebore a 26" and make it 24" octagon for a 6.5x08 or 6.5x284 for total of 7.5 lbs or a bit less. Fred M. zermel@shaw.ca

Allen, the 1A is the lightest and has the narrowest barrel contour. Lou **************** NRA Life Benefactor Member

Perhaps as light as 7.5 pounds with a lightweight scope. My 22" barreled .45/70 weighs 7.5 pounds with a Leupold Compact 4X scope on it. "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

I have a #1 that has a #1 (22"OAL/.540" muzzle, K-Hornet) contour barrel with an Alex Henry forend. With an older Leupold 8xAO it's just under 8lbs. I think(?) the scope weighs 12-14 ozs.

Allen, Basically it's shorter and slimmer. I'll take a pic or two and email to the address in your profile.

I will only buy a #1 if it's a 1S, 1A or 1H because they have the Alexander Henry forend. I don't care for the look of the 1B or 1Vbecause of the long forend and no sights. The 1A is a real pleasure to carry afield. Lou **************** NRA Life Benefactor Member

I'm with you. I've been looking for #1S models since they came out. I've only seen 4 for sale and I bought three of them, all in .300 Win. mag. Makes me wonder if they ever chambered them in any other cartridge. In fact, all four were in .300 win. mag. The one I passed on was at Cabela's up by Phoenix, and they wanted $800 firm for what I'd have called a beater. Stock looked like it rode in a saddle scabbard through lots of brush and about half the bluing was gone. No scope or rings and the bore needed serious cleaning. I'll buy "B" models but they're not my favorites. I have thought about trying to rshape then into something more suitable. Paul B.

Here's a couple of pics of my No.1's. RSI 7x57 I've actually changed the scopes in these two pictures. The Leupold 1.5-5x is now on the RSI and the 1.75-6x is now on the 338 Win Mag. The RSI is roughly 7.25 pounds with the 1.5-5x on it, in standard Ruger rings. No.1 S 338 Win Mag (Thought I had one of the rifle alone uploaded, but I guess not) The No.1S is about 8.5 pounds with the 1.75-6x in standard Ruger rings. The No.1 action is just a heavy action for a lightweight rifle. They are decently balanced, but not as well as something a custom gunmaker can work up. If I were looking for an ideal light stalking type rifle, I'd look to the Hagn or Dakota action to lighten the weight and keep the balance. But those are much more expensive than the Ruger.

I have a 1S in 7MM Rem Mag. They were also listed in .338 Win mag. With the 7MM bore and the medium profile barrel it is a boat anchor. It has beautiful wood though and one day will get a new barrel in a different caliber.
