I picked up my new H&R in 45-70 yesterday. I was surprised at how well it is finished given the price. Loaded some 300 grain lead RNFPs this afternoon and will shoot it tomorrow and report. "When you play, play hard; when you work, don't play at all." Theodore Roosevelt

My report, sort of. I like the rifle, made much better with the addition of a slip on leather butt pad. It groups well. BUT, the sights are poor. I believe the front sight, a Lyman aperture, is not well paired with the Williams rear aperture. For one thing two apertures are overkill. This is not a bullseye rifle. I cannot get sufficient elevation on the Williams rear to get POI anywhere near POA even at 60 yards.... that's with 50 grains of Varget under a 405 lead hard cast bullet; approx. 1750 fps. With the 300 grain RNFPs and 50 grains of Varget I can do it, but it takes near full upward extension of the Williams to do it. And this was at 60 yards! For 100, 200, and 500 yard long range cowboy these sights will not cut it. A better front sight would have been a fixed blade with a bead, mounted lower. I am going to work on replacing both of them. Any suggestions would be appreciated. "When you play, play hard; when you work, don't play at all." Theodore Roosevelt

The front sight they put on them is usually the .584" 17A sight, the .494" is the proper sight, but anyone wanting to shoot longer range will want to use the .404" sight. I also prefer to use the Lee Shaver inserts. With the .404" 17a and a Williams FP-HR-TK rear sight, 405gr at 1500fps will be 1½" high at 100yd with the rear sight at the bottom. http://www.go2gbo.com/forums/i...46036.html#msg446036

Many thanks, amigo. I'd rather call you "righttarget." I just ordered the Williams FP-H&R-TK and a Williams .410 front blade with a gold bead. Will report once get it done. "When you play, play hard; when you work, don't play at all." Theodore Roosevelt

I'll anxiously await your report as well. I handled one of these a few months ago, and it dang nearly followed me home. I have a feeling one of them will do so before long. I like mine! Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too! Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

My preliminary report. I have to say that the new sights as recommended by "wrongtarget" truly made a great difference. Why H&R does not do better with the factory sights escapes me. I am still working on it and will try in the next few weeks to work out to 3-400 yards. There is more than ample adjustment in the new Williams to do so. The leather slip on pad I bought from Cabela's is a big improvement as well. "When you play, play hard; when you work, don't play at all." Theodore Roosevelt

Glad to read that, they do offer the FP-TK-HR rear sight as an accessory, last price list I have it was $65, prolly more now like everything else. You can also get a gib lock knob to replace the elevation set screw from Brownell's, but you may have to shorten the screw on it so it doesn't hit the barrel.
