I encountered a #1B in .338 Win Mag today for $650, had a 4x Leupold on it, nice trigger. I think $500 would be more reasonable, but then again I dont need a 338. It'll probably sell quick, most #1s do.

I have been looking at used Ruger #1s on boards like Gunsamerica and Gunbroker.com; and they seem to run in the $500-$650 range. I don't get it. The internet retailers will sell you a new one for less than $680. If someone is going to buy a rifle sight unseen, wouldn't they almost always prefer a new rifle for $680 over a used one (which the seller might be selling because of accuracy problems) for $500?

Sometimes an older model is more desireable. I bought a 1V for 400 last month. It was set up for a unertle scope only. I sold it to someone who had said scope. Some of the early ones have Douglas premium bbls. I just saw a 1A in 7x57 for 425. It is in real good shape. One could put the savings into a custom trigger or scope. I think you could probably find ones in 458 much cheaper used. Those turn out to have more recoil than people expect.

i bought a 1B 22/250 just a few days ago for $170 but it had been carried on a horse and tractor as a farm gun since 1975. blueing is wore off and stocks are trash but the action is nice and tite and the bore is perfect. farmer i got it from said it had less then 200rds shot through it. at the same time i have a 1V made in 1972 that has one of the Douglas barrels on it, it was a 22/250 that i had recut to 22/250AI it's priceless to me. sub 1/4 moa rifle. i oraginaly had a Lyman 20x on it but now days it's a Burris 8-32

I've been picking mine up at gun shows for anywhere from $400 to $500 most of the time. I prefer the older ones because the triggers are truly adjustable. The most I've paid for a #1 was for my #1H in .404 jeffery. That was $750. Gun came with 200 rounds of ammo and new brass, loading dies and bullets. My .416 Rigby was $550, but it came with ammo and loading dies. The fellow that sold it had bought it that very day and was out at the range to see how it shot. After 5 rounds, he was ready to throw it away. He said it kicked too damn hard. He offered to let me shoot it and being the type to shoot just about anything once, I did. My wife saw the cartridge and said, "You're not gonna shoot that thing are you?' I said, "Yup!" and proceeded to do so. I bought the whole package on the spot. Since Ruger's suggested retail price jumped to where it is, prices on used #1's have also taken a big jump. Guess it you want one bad enough, you'll just have to pay the freight. Out of the 14 #1 rifles I have, only one has ever had to go back to Ruger for repairs. It was a #1A in 7x57. It's an early one with one of the farmed out barrels Ruger used to use. The throat was almost two inches long. Ruger replaced the barrel and it now shoots just fine. I collect the things so I'm always on the lookout for them at decent prices. I do usually draw the line at $500 though, unless it is in one of the more exotic calibers. Paul B.

Chuckwagon. Strange thing about Ruger #1's in .404 Jeffery. Seems like, from what I've heard, that if someone has one with problems and they send it back to Ruger, Ruger either offers them another rifle in a different caliber or a check. The story, as I understand it, is Ruger made the chambers according to someone's specs. (I don't know whose. May have been Norma, RWS, or ???)Problem is brass from one company is different from other companies so problems occur. As Ruger supposedly reclaims these rifles, they become more scarce. Mine is worth a bit less as the fellow I got it from put a muzzle brake on it. What I have to do to fix the oddball brass problem is I got a bunch of cast bullets from Beartooth. I seat them so that they are snug into the rifling and have a decently powerful charge. This fireforms the brass to my chamber, and I've set the dies up for use in my rifle. End of problems. From what I understand, .404's were only made for two years, and I think there were only about 2,000 made. Apparently the "attrition" rate has been such that there are quite a bit less now in private hands. Paul B.

I'm told their were only 80 made. I'm not sure if that is accurate.
