I always wanted a R No1, but didn�t because of the weight. They look great, and I will have a bigbore No1 sometime, but what I got instead was the Blaser K95, wonderfull gun. Much better finish than a Ruger, much better trigger, very accurate. Taildraggin says that reloading is difficult because of the action lockup overhangs the chamber, but my experience is that this does not hinder reloading at all. The action has a good opening angle and the lack of an extractor is made up by how quikly/easily the action opens without a hammer/extractor to cock upon opening. Add to this that the action is the safest you can get, exchange barrels and a built in QR scope mount system it gets my vote for the best single shot. Still want a custom No1 in 8X68S though... But only if I can keep the K95 as well!

My Cooper Varmint Extreme in 223 is hard to beat accuracy wize and with the wood upgrade easy on the eyes. I let a Ruger #1AB in 7x57 slip through my fingers years ago when I had a 7x57AI being built and have regretted it. I'm seriouisly considering a Browning Low Wall in 243 I saw this weekend. If money was no problem I would have a Dakota #10 in 7x57.

I guess because I own a 22PPC, 243, 270AI, 340W, 38/55, 404Jeff and 45/120 I might just be partial to the Ruger Number 1.

Wow didn't see anyone mention the cheaper priced H&R or NEF rifles I have a H&R ultra varmint in 223 with a 24" heavy 'barrel and i just got a 32' 45/70 barrel , my Dad shoots a NEF in 30/06. I invite anyone to out shoot us . Later Dave

I would vote for the Ruger #1, I have owned three brands H&R (NEF)in 45-70, Browning in 45-70 and I've used my 45-70 to work up extensive loads, then redrilled it to 45 basic RCBS 3 1/4" AKA 45-120ss and find this about right for any game on the face of the earth, but limited to about 175 yards. It does shoot better with the synthetic stock but would love an extra 6" barrel. My latest is a stainless 1-B in 25-06 and love the rifle.

i agree with mister burnsides, i got a bunch of NEF's an havent found many gun that really shoot better , got one 223 -17HMR - 243-30/30-45/70-3 in hornet, all shoot less then an inch at 100 hard to beat?

Martini Cadet in 22LR with 28 inch Heavy 5 star barrel, benchrest forearm, Unertl 10X scope and lots of engraving, high checkpiece buttstock with modified lever fitted into the pistol grip. Shoots .5 inch groups at 100 yards with green tag!

Browning 1885 high wall in 45-70 with a 4-12X Bushnell. 350 gr Barnes X bullet with IMR 4350 @50.0 gr. Coconut rocker, but the bullet doesn't drop ANY at 200yds. Great accuracy and there is nothing i wouldn't fear shooting in the great North America. Of course you got to make sure that shot is well placed.

Those all sound like wonderful guns, but you have to get a Cooper before you end up on the other side of the dirt. I have a 6PPC Model 21. I took it to the range one weekend and it shot itself! I would like to say I am a benchrest competitor or some kind of championship caliber shooter, but I'm not. That damn gun just shoots! It's amazing. When I got home, I looked at the one-hole ragged target sample they include with every gun, and all the sudden it didn't seem like such a small group. Get one of these guns!!!

Which one is best? If you haven't seen one of Martin Hagns Single shot you are missing a treat. The price tag is right up there but if you are looking at new manufacture it is the best in my book. As far as reachable and realistic I would go for the Ruger #1.

If you ask me which one I would absolutely love to have it is an old original Farquharson. Pricey also and beyond my reach.

Sorry - but I have a NEF 1871 buffalo classic that will do all the above for alot less .. Accurate , 1inch at 100 yds , deadly , and fun to shoot .

I've recently acquired a Dakota Model 10 in 7x57 complete with color case-hardened receiver and rings. It is light, makes my pulse race when I look at it and will put 3 139gr. Hornadys into 5/8 inches repeatedly. It's not the best single shot under $500 but that wasn't the question. I consider it the best single shot I've ever owned. It's true that beauty's in the eye of the beholder, but with apologies to a distinguished poster on this board, "Life's too short to hunt with an ugly gun"

i agree with the use the t/c frame and go custoum with with the barrels.once i got a custoum barrel for my encore i thought factoury was junk but you can get lucky and get a shooter.the other route would be savage you can easaly change barrel on them to dont take much money to get tools to do it.or get any rifle and put a bench rest follower in it like a rem adl. i guess it depends on if you want a break open or bolt gun. if you need any info ill try to help. jason

The Ruger No. 1 is the best, for those of us who cannot afford the best.... Like Hagn, Blaser, Heym, Dakota, Ferlach, Rizzini, etc., etc.

Well I too have to say Ruger #1-V. I wanted a 220 swift or 22-250 but there she was in 25-06 with a $400 feather crotch stock. And just like some beautiful woman, she was no good. She wouldn't put them in a 2" circle at 100 yrds. Just when I was about to divorce her, I tried a 75 gr. V-max with 60 gr. RL-19 and WOW! Under.5 at 100 yrds. But just like a good looking woman, the men wont keep their hands off her and I have to watch my back all the time. Now I just leave her locked in the van until I'm ready to take her dancing at the bench. Everyone gets to look but only a few get to dance with her, and I watch every move they make. I never get her back that they don't rub thir dirty hands on her flaming butt. Hovever, I'm the one that gets to polish her butt and put her to bed! I thank God I have her.

Gotta be the Hagn and it is my pick for best of the best. Great styling, trigger, safety, workmanship and all the other basic essentials. Colt Sharps are nice, but heavy, harder to use safety, not near as good of construction and most have some rust or pits on them. DeHaas Miller rifles are very good. Best ones for using, IMHO, are the ones that do not have exposed hammers.

You have to take a look at the new Griffin Fraser sidelever. Absolutely first class workmanship throughout. The action uses a trigger plate action and all of the action parts are mounted on the bottom plate. Like the original, The block does not drop out the bottom when the action is open. A slick, lightweight piece.
There is an article in the October 2001 Single Shot Exchange about the action and one is on the cover of the March- April 2003 Single Shot Rifle Journal. Have a look.
I have one in 30-40 Krag and am getting 2800+ FPS with a 150 gr. Ballistic Tip. No signs of excessiive pressure. Ballistic tables be damned. Full speed ahead.
The action is made in Houston TX. Price is $2250.00. Definitely priced for the stouthearted. It is ever bit as good as the Hagn and miles ahead of the Ruger.

I have a 38 special hole punch utilizing a Ruger# 3 action. Use to be my wife could hit a 1/4" red dot every time at 50 yds.

Being more of a utilitarian type guy rather than gloating over a show piece I have built a number of single shot rifles from mod. 98 mausers and the like.

One ss was a 6.5 carcano carbine rechambered to 6.5x55 and lightened to 5 lbs.No uuhhhs or aaahhhs from anyone for my stuff but I have fun you bet. Roger
