Every time I think the bucket list is complete [by that I mean it has enough items on it but they have not at all been achieved] then I think of something else to add to it. I have always admired the Ruger No. 1 but I just sort of forgot about it for a while. I would like to get one in .308 but there seems to be few if any for sale, So what about buying another caliber and converting it to .308?Where to start?

You could re bore a .243,

Single shots in 308 are kind of a waste of a good action; 308 is for short bolt actions and autos; single shots have no length limit. Broaden your scope and get a 30-06, which are easier to get. Or better, get a 9.3, 375, or 450-400 is the best #1 caliber. You can still hunt deer with it.

If you can't find a new No. 1 in .308 there are plenty of used ones available, sometimes in pristine condition.
I don't think there is anything wrong with a single shot rifle in .308. There are some advantages to going with that caliber. It is a good all around hunting caliber and it can be very, very accurate. It is one of the few calibers for which you can purchase factory made match ammunition. It is also a great performer in short, carbine length barrels. Ruger recognized the last point and offered it in their short barreled International version. And, as pointed out by dcpd, "single shots have no length limit" [within reason]. That gives you the extra length you want for loading long lead-free bullets and heavy for caliber bullets, like the 200gr and 220gr.

I see little reason to use the .308 in a SS rifle, the 308 is a grand cartridge but more suited to lever, and auto rifles as it was designed for such..The 30-06 is the better option and you can load it down to .308 ballistics or up to darn near 300 Win. ballistics in that strong No. 1 action. Also you can pick up a No 1 in an 06 at about any gun store. You can seat out bullets in the 06 as well as you can in a .308.

JMHO. That's like buying a custom hot rod with a Dodge slant 6 cylinder engine in it.

I think a .308 is best in a bolt, but I do agree with Ray on this one. I would rather have a .308 in a bolt gun, but in a No.1, go with the 06 for the reasons stated. The .308 is very accurate, but the No.1 isn't the easiest rifle to get to shoot, so I would go with the 06.

I love the 308! It is the most accurate big game round I have ever fired and/or hunted with. I see absolutely no reason to not want a #1 in 308. If it can be difficult to get #1's to shoot, then why not just start ahead by chambering one in a truly super accurate cartridge. Yes, the 308 first appeared in bolt and lever guns, but so did most other rimless rounds. I think a 24-26" 1-S in 308 would be SWEET!! One could rebore/re-chamber a 1-S 218 Bee. I've thought of doing that with several different rounds. I say go for it.

I think that a Ruger #1 in .348 Win would be a perfect combination.
