An aquaintance of mine has inherited a single shot rifle that neither he nor I know anything about. The rifle is Shuetzen style in appearence and has these markings on it

BOHLERSTAHL
CG HAENEL
8MM
A 5 digit number is also present that we take to be the serial #.

The barrel is octagonal although I am unsure of its lenght but he reports it as "long" (I haven`t yet seen the rifle)
My friend is interested in any history, possible value, or other info on this rifle.
The rifle was a war trophy handed down by his grandfather.

There is a Haenel rifle in 22 mag (rechambered from 22LR) floating around WA. Very nice rifle, reeks of quality German gunsmithing. It was selling for $850 last time I saw it.

Bohlerstahl - the barrel is made by Bohler Steel Co .Have you measured the chamber ? There are a few cartridges such as the 8x58R Sauer that might have been used.

Quite a number of German Gew '88 rifles were made into sporting arms by the Haenel firm, and are generally known as Mannlicher-Haenels.

The ones I've seen were in the same class as the Mannlicher-Schoenauer as far as quality was concerned, but of course they all had that projecting Mannlicher-style magazine box! Most had double-set triggers, and were in 8X57J caliber.

Basically very nice guns!

It could be an 8.15x46 mm R as well, most popular cartrige for those old single shots.
