Don't know anything about single shots but was looking at a Browning M. 1885 and kind of liked it. I'm looking for a walking around rifle in say .243 or something. Any recommendations ? Don't care for those Nef or what not rifles.

My deer rifle is an 1885 in 45-70. They are well made and very accurate ,with a nice adjustable trigger. Mine came with a 28" barrel which I cut to 22" for a more handy hunting rifle. I suggest you grab the 1885 , you'll never regrete it.

.358,
The low wall was a lower pressure version of the 1885 Win. Browning's updated version is plenty strong enough to handle the 243, which is the largest caliber they made the low wall in. At about 6 pounds unscoped, it would make an outstanding walking-around rifle. A 24" barrel on a rifle the length of a carbine is nothing to sneeze at, either. Fit and finish are excellent on the examples I've seen. I'm a big fan of the Browning 1885's. Just bought a NIB 7mm Mag, in fact. Jump on it while you can, because they don't make them anymore. Winchester is releasing limited versions of the old-time rounds and 17 HMR, but that's about it.

In the high-wall, more of the breechblock is supported by the receiver frame when closed, so it is stronger. However, the Browning Low-Walls must be plenty strong since they are chambered in .243 and .260 Rem., both of which operate at pressures as high as any in the .308 family! I don't see why they didn't make any in .308 and 7mm'08 as well, since they would undoubtedly sell well! IMO, I'd much rather carry a Low Wall than drag one of those ponderous Hi-Walls around in the woods! I also like the Ruger No. 1A's as portable shooters!!

Lo-wall was also available in 260 Rem, as I procured a beautiful one for a friend.

Oops...didn't notice Eldeguello's post on the 260 availability. Wish I had bought one myself!

Sorry guys, forgot about the .260. Eldeguello is right, the Ruger #1A light sporter is also a great packing rifle, usually a little less expensive than the Browning and available in more calibers.

I have a Low Wall in .260. By far, the most beautiful rifle I own, and doesn't shoot bad either. Has averaged 1.183" for the last 15 three-shot groups I have shot with it. Also very light. A joy to carry.
