Does anyone know of any safety issues with Borchardt rifles? I have a military rifle in 45-70 I would like to shoot. Thanks.

They originally had "black-powder" size (large) firing pins, which require that the pin hole be bushed and a smaller-diameter pin be used for conversion to high-intensity cartridges. I assume that this alteration would be required if you want to use heavy .45/70 loads. However, if you stick to loads not more than 28,000 PSI, I believe a Borchardt in good condition would be plenty strong enough.

Has anyone heard of parts exiting the rear of the breech block? If yes, it could be disturbing. I will be using trapdoor level smokeless loads. Thanks.

NO!

I would think that any problems would be well known by now since there were a good many of these rifles built. One fellow had told me of a man that specialized in revamping these guns for safe operation. This included replacing the breech block. I was unaware of any problems.

I do not know if it is a concern at Trapdoor pressure levels, but I've read it is possible to blow out the breech plug (spring retainer) on a Borchardt. Borchardt's patent called for using a screw plug, but in production, Sharps used a simple cross pin to hold in the plug, and one of not very great diameter.

You might try the forums at the ASSRA. A gunsmith there owns several, and one is converted to .300 Win Mag. I recall he said he bushed the pin and added vent holes.

Al Story, who is making modern reproductions of the Borchardt, is using the screw plug, and he might also be able to answer your concerns.
