I found a Remington rolling block military in 50/70 that is absolitly pristine condition. The bore is mirror bright with full rifling. The rifle has 1871 and the butt has stamped "NY 110th" Any historians able to tell me more about the 110th. Was it a militia regiment?

Yes, it was an NY State regiment from the Oswego County area, and participated in the Civil War. Check it out at http://www.dmna.state.ny.us/historic/reghist/civil/infantry/110thInf/110thInfMain.htm Obviously, as evidenced by the date on your rifle, this Regiment continued to exist following the end of the Civil War, most likely as a New York State Guard unit, prior to the organization of the U.S. National Guard. BTW, a number of States today continue to have State Militia units in addition to each state's National Guard. NY is one of these that still has a state militia. Th reason for these units is that in times of national emergency, the National Guard is subject to federalization, and can be deployed to foreign countries. States need some kind of military capability in such situations, and state militias are not subject to being deployed outside of the U.S. (Sounds like a fun rifle!!)
