I've only owned two #1's and the first, a .458 Win Mag, had the same problem. I really wanted it scoped, but with the heavy recoil, I didn't want to climb the stock, and get hit by the scope when I fired it. I gave up, and bought the 1978 vintage Lyman Centennial model, with factory Lyman scope, which I still own. It's a great combination, and the whole package fits me perfectly.
Yea, I know they were commemorative, and I'm not supposed to shoot it, but someone did before me, so why not go for it! It's a great shooting, super accurate gun.

I have just bought a stainless/laminate #1 in 375 h&h and had a question about mounting a scope, does anyone have any problem with eye relief? looking at the rifle it seems that the scope will be mounted way to far forward, I dont have a scope to try on it yet, not even on another rifle, can someone lay my fears to rest please?

i always use old style leupold 4x scopes because of the problems you have noticed, if you can't find 1 try a 1.25x5 leupold

Try an old Burris Fullfield series scope. I had one on a #1 in 7mm mag. It was a 3x9 fullfield. Eye relief was fine due to the fact that the adjustment turrets are positioned differently on these scopes. Good shooting!

You might need a set of offset rings (Ruger or Leupold). Quite a few folks have the same problem. I'm one. It depends how you shoulder the rifle also.

I have (2) #1S, both mounted w/ Leup. VXIII 2.5x8 in Ruger rings. They are a tiny bit farther forward than the same scope mounted on my bolt guns, but it doesn't bother me.

yes, one of my few complaints about the No. 1's with the sight rib. These should be furnished with extension rings so you can get the eye relief right!
