I own several 45-70 rifles, but it took years before I found a mint 45-70 Wickliffe '76 rifle. The rifle is all original with williams iron sights on a 24" barrel. Does anyone know the "approximate value"? I was thinking about modifying the gun by having it drilled and tapped for scope mounting. I own several Ruger no.1 rifles and a Sharps in 45-70, please advise. Thanks! Glenn

Hi Powhatan! I have one of those Wickliffe's too only in 30-06. I saw one in .243 for $800.00. Wouldn't know much about the value but it seems that a .45-70 ought to be pretty desirable. I finally picked up a copy of 1978 Gun Digest off of E-Bay like a guy on this group suggested & they have a whole article on it. Good stuff like how to adjust the trigger & ejector. Mine came drilled & tapped already. I'm hanging on to mine.

Hello Newtire! Thanks for getting back to me, I didn't realize that other members had posted back in October 2004. If you have a scanner I would like to have a copy of that article for my own use of course. I looked at "Modern Gun Values" sixth edition, which was in 1985! They list four model of the Wickliffe rifle; Model'76, Model '76 Deluxe, Tradionalist, and the Stinger. It appears that the model I have is the Traditionalist. It is noted that the gun was "introduced, 1979; dropped,1980". The value quoted in 1985 was " $275-$300" Thanks for reminding me to look through my library to find an old book. I love single shots and I love 45-70. Yes I am hanging on to mine as well. My thoughts were to modify the piece, however normally we know you should keep it "stock". I modified the heck out of my Ruger No. 1 in 45-70, and love it as a shooter.

Hi Again Powhatan, Sorry that I don't have a scanner to copy anything with but it only took about a week of looking on E-bay periodically to find a 1978 Gun Digest for sale. It set me back a whole $6.25 including shipping from Georgia to California.

25th Edition Blue Book says $395 in 100% condition. $300 in 90%. It is a good citizen's duty to love the country and hate the gubmint.
