Does anybody have any experience using the Hicks Accurizer? I recently installed one on my #1B .300Win. Should be going shooting soon. But I wanted to know if there was anything special about this thing, or any tricks using it.

Guess not, whiplash. Try looking on 24 Hr Campfire. I believe there's a thread about this. Something like 1/4 turn at a time 'til the sweet spot's found, or something like that. I just finished freefloating the bbl with epoxy on my recently acquired 1B. Made a profound difference, especially with walking shots (hot bbl.)vertically. It simply doesn't do it now. A bonus was that the 90 gr. FMJ Speers I used for fireforming, etc., now group 3/4 in. or so, (@ 100 yds.)instead of throwing buckshot-type patterns. BTW, I checked the web-site of the guy that used to produce the Hicks accurizer, and it doesn't show on his product list at all, now. Maybe someone else manufactures it. Good luck. Adios. Edit: Just looked on 24 Hr CF - one guy says he just makes contact with bbl., then screws in 1/8th of a turn 'til he's happy. Wish I knew how to post a link to there. It's on the SS rifle forum.

Whiplash. The Hicks accurizer will put tension on the barrel .032" is about right. Hicks accurizer I have installed a wood block between the barrel and the hanger to bend the hanger down by .032. Started out with .060 first and reduced in stages to .032. Tremendous improvement in accuracy with the wood damper. [IMG:left] [/IMG] You will have to do some work on the forarm to make up for the 0.032 lower hanger. The forarm will loose contact with the barrel. I steel bedded a new hanger seat and filled the forarm void with Dow expanding spray foam. A dampened free float. Fred M. zermel@shaw.ca

I have used a thick rubber washer in the same area as your wood piece, and it worked ok. But I wanted something more permenent, so I got the Hicks deal. I am taking the #1 (.300Win)out tomorrow morning. Hopefully things go well. I am testing 200gr Accubonds...

I picked up somebody's abortion of a custom job based on a Ruger #1, mostly because the rifle appealled to me and was a bit different. They's taken a Ruger #1 action, did up a fairly nice custom stock and placed a Remington barrel chambered to .223 Rem. onto the action. The gun didn't shoot worth a damn, and nothing I tried seemed to want to work. By all rights I should have dumped the gun and ate the loss, but being a stobborn cuss at times decided to try the Hicks Accurizer. No help there. I took the rifle to my friendly (and expensive)gunsmith to try and figure out what the problem was. Well, it turns out the barrel was bad. He had a replacement barrel (another Remington) which he gave me a good price on and then socked it to me with the installation and headspacing. Off to the range to see if the gun will now shoot. It was better, but still not what I wanted. By tweaking the Hicks Accurizor, I did manage to get it down to one inch groups which is good enough for the rifle's purpose, a walkabout coyote gun. I like to glass for coyotes, then try to sneak up on them and shoot. Success may not come very often, but it sure does help my deer stalking. So, does the Hicks work? It did in my case, enough so that I'd like to put one in all of my #1 collection, but they cost too damn much. Most of my #1s shoot well enough that they don't need one anyway. Paul B.
