DB Smith.
This old rejuvinated Webly SS action looks dated and bulky, not like the Ruger#1 with its clean and elegant appearence.

Yes the big tenent can take some of these monster cartriges if that is what you have in mind.IMHO there is nothing that will stand up to the big cartridges that the #1 can handle. Like the 458 Lott and the likes.

hein dose build scaled actions so depenting on the case size it may be smaller or larger.

the down side to the ruger is if you want to go big say larger than the 458 lott its not such a good idea cause the barrel threads are 1" on the number 1 and when you go big it dosnt leave you with much meat on those chamber walls plus it difficult to probperly weight a number one when chamber for such cartriges

This I did not know. Just the same that action looks ugly.

Yes the 458 Lott is about as big a case you can go in the Ruger#1, and that cartridge is capable of taken anything on four feet.

Four to a pound is bigger, yes? In a BP gun this may be of value.

Bowen classic arms used to build 577 2 3/4" express' on the ruger number one. SSK stil does to this day. I've read that you should not go any bigger than that. The 500 and 470 niro's are no sweat in the number 1. I have an old Rifle or Handloader magazine article around here somewhere that details all of this. It was pened by Ross Seyfried.

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

i don't know what caliber you want to build on a falling block action. about april we'll have another production of the wickliffe '76 action.

this makes ruger #1 look like a toy. it is patterened after the stevens 44 1/2 but on a larger scale.

the action kit is fully machined & hardened, ready to be polished, blued then assembled. they'll sell for about $400. all parts made of 4140 steel.

it won't take a 600 without modification but i think it will take a 577. i'll check tomorrow.

if you want to see pics email me at

Tomo577,

any issues with a rimless case...like the 505 Gibbs cylindrical? Just curious, you know how that is...? It mikes about .635" on the rim and cartridge base.

the extractor / ejector can be sized down to handle larger diameter cases. rimless cases work ok - 338 & 458 lott are just fine. no reason your gibbs won't work that i know of.

you may have to adjust the extractor pin to fit the extractor groove in the gibbs but that shouldn't be a problem

They aren't ugly. Just in the same category as rhubarb pie; an acquired taste. I would like to have one in .600NE, just a little short on the cash end.
Wickliffe 76 Mk III's, now those I can afford!

Ruger No. 1 will manage a 460 Weatherby, but needs to be tapped from a 458 Lott/Weatherby bbl. to get the right twist in the rifling.

Not familiar with the stress config/specs on a Ruger No. 1.

The two complaints I hear about the Number 1 are that the bbl. is too short. And the receiver/bbl. lug is too short. Ohhhhhh yeah, and the way the fore-end hangs suspended under.

But I'm new to them, waiting for one to be returned from Ruger, replacing the lever latch.
