hello, the barrel is actually 20 inches and that isn't all that short. I have one in 270 and one in 243. They don't really make much more of a ruckus than the standard 22 inch barrelled rifles that are out there. The overall length of the gun is short, but the action is short so you get more barrel per length than you do with a bolt, lever or semi-auto gun. Don't sweat the ballistics. I wish I had one in 7x57....can't have too many toys... regards, graycg

Gentlemen, today I took a look at a Ruger Number One 7x57 with Mannlicher style full stock. I liked the rifle, but there are some questions. Since the barrel is rather short, I suppose the muzzle bang will be quite heavy, and bullet velocities relatively slow. How much of that can be compensated by proper reloading? The action seems to work smooth, but there are clicking noises on opening and ejection of spent cases. Can the action be trimmed to work silently? Full length stocks has a bit of bad reputation for bad accuracy. Also with this rifle? Of course I would be grateful for other aspects and experiences too. Best regards, Fritz
