Just picked up an as new High Wall in .22-250 with fantastic wood. Wow, what a slick and strong action with a very nice trigger. Love that octagonal barrel at 28".

Haven't shot it yet. I plan to mount a Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40. Should have some results on accuracy middle of next week. If it shoots good, then I'm going to take that high gloss finish down to a satin.

It will then become my coyote / bobcat rifle.

Anyone else shoot one of these rifles in .22-250 or .7mmRM?

Mine is a real cartridge 45-70 ! wave
It's a great gun though that 28" barrel got shortened to 22" to make a handier and lighter woods rifle.Reblued to matt and wood to satin.
You'll love it !

Mounted my Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40 utilizing Leupold bases and Leupold Medium rings. Great visual picture, but very tight for having to manually operate the hammer. I am practicing with it, but the room left for my thumb is small and tight. Shouldn't be a problem with varmit rifle; wouldn't want it with a DG rifle.

Mike, get a hammer extension, like on a scoped levergun. I think you'll find the rifle to be exceedingly accurate....the ones I've had were.

For cocking I found it akward to do it with thumb parallel to the bore .I now do it thumb 90* to bore and forward of the hammer and bring the thumb back to cock. You do have to move your hand a bit.Try that .

I think the hammer sits too low to use a spur on the 1885.

Quint, you may be right. I never had scope/hammer issues on the ones I had, so never had to try it.

Still haven't shot it yet, which is remarkable for me since I usually shoot everything as soon as I get it. I have been practicing with it in the bedroom, and I seem to be getting a handle on working the hamner; although the space is very tight.

I'm going to shoot it first, then decide what to do about the hammer. Thanks to everyone for the imput so far, and please continue to send your info. I am a sponge for learning.

Had four, down to two. 25-06 Wyoming Centennial that is touching 4000 fps with the new Barnes 80 TTSX (odd 1 in 13 twist). The 45-70 is mint and is a ball with 65 gr of 2F and a 400 gr cast bullet. The 28" barrels are wonderful and the rifles' OAL is no more than a bolt gun with a 22-24" bbl. It's a shame no one has come out with a Winchester style SST for them.

You never owned any, Larry. As has been your pattern, you've absconded with some else's photographs and claimed them as your own.

But all of that aside, please tell me about your time in Vietnam as an F105 pilot and "rooming" with Marine snipers along the DMZ. In what unit were you assigned? I have a now-retired co-worker who was in the 1st Marines around Quang Tri 1968-69 who would be interested in visiting with you. Shall I give him your contact information, Larry? How do you think he will react to your story, Larry? Favorably or unfavorably?

Mine was formerly chambered in 7mm Remington Magnum. I sent it to McGowen and had it re-barreled to 6.5x55mm with a 1 in 8" twist.

Funny how this serial liar can NEVER come up with a single source of where I steal all the photos.
Just put him on ignore an perhaps he'll go back to the troll home site where he came from.
Hell he even lies about his hometown.....

Stolen from where....Bricktop ?

Poor sad little skinny whiteboy who pretend to be Negro.

You put your phantom USMC buddy in touch with me, it would be nice to speak with someone who actually served his country and can probably fill me in on the small amount of information missing from your profile. Somehow I believe that, as with all your numerous fabrications, I'll never hear a word.

You've taken them from various Gunbroker sellers, as has been your hallmark, Larry.

You're projecting AGAIN, Larry. I asked YOU to state in which unit YOU claim service in Vietnam. You know, the one where you were "flying" F105s and "rooming" with Marine snipers. Come on, Larry, some shit-hot salty dog like you ought to be proud of that. Unless you're scared that your lies are beginning to trip you up.

Sorry to interrupt the troll thumping, but I have an 1885 in 22-250. I've had it for a number of years and for quite a while it was my absolute favorite varmint gun. It would shoot 3/4" at 200 yds from the bench using H414 and 55 gr Ballistic tips.

I've also got one in 30-06 and 22 Hornet. Just bought a Winchester version in 223. All of them shoot very accurately.

Sorry you were interrupted by Bricktop (aka Miles). Almost amazing how in three posts he trips over himself every time.
Has anyone ever seen an auction in Gun broker with ONE photo of THREE rifles for sale ?

Here are some more I "stole" I'm sure you all remember these multiple gun auctions on Gun Broker as well. Funny how the fake Negro serial liar KNOWS they came from Gunbroker BUT cannot come up with a SINGLE auction number. Odd eh ?

Actually these were photos taken for my special gun insurance policy.

Now about this Marine buddy of his:

He said: "I have a now-retired co-worker who was in the 1st Marines around Quang Tri 1968-69 who would be interested in visiting with you. Shall I give him your contact information, Larry? How do you think he will react to your story, Larry? Favorably or unfavorably?"

I said to have him contact me, Funny how that lie/threat has also evaporated isn't it ?

As for the DMZ lie, he cannot produce any documentation on it, he just made it up or, were I blunt, he just LIED again. However unlike him, I did wear the uniform so the poor woman who bore him was safe back in the good old USA. Unlike this piece of fake Negro trash, my family has served in every American conflict since the Rev. war.
He never would have lasted long in uniform as serial liars get weeded out quite quickly.

Then we have his 1885 6.5x55. On the site he stalked me from it was a Ruger # 1. Guess it had a sex change. Now about the range photos ...... sure doesn't like like anywhere around Pinedale Wyoming. We have three ranges in the area (50 mile radius) and none look a bit like this one he shows. In fact the leaves are still on the trees here and if you look in any direction from any of them you'll see mountains not flat OK prairie.
Looks like yet another multifaceted lie.
Needless to say, a gun club (Pinedale) where people shoot year round, and temps get well into negative double digits, does not have uncovered concrete benches. Nope we have nice building with wooden benches and a good wood stove.

Bricktop I know you are not very bright, but aren't you getting tired of puking up the same of BS over and over ? You know it's untrue and you can't even fake proof when proof is needed (witness your "on the road photos" when you "visited" Pinedale). Don't you think most folks have figured out that all you do is lie. You can't even tell the truth about your home town !

I would guess that I am not alone in resenting your pirating threads and telling bold faced lies over and over and over again. Those of us who actually own fine guns and don't shoot nursing female game animals would really like to see you just zip it up.

We've been over your predilection with Photoshop and Gunbroker on 24HCF many, many times, Larry.

My rifle is well-documented on 24HCF as well.

There's also a pretty good thread over there where the mere thought of me coming to visit Pinedale sent you into hiding and calling the police.

But let's get back to your problems with truth, Larry.

Post up the name of the unit to which you were assigned, Larry.

You continue with this projection crap. You've told so many lies about yourself, you automatically believe everyone else is doing the same. You act dishonorably as involuntarily as breathing, therefore you believe everyone else is just like you.

Where are these "members" of your "club" to defend and back you up, Larry?

Miles, (Bricktop) we have never "been over" over ANYTHING.
You don't live in Pinedale, you have never been to Pinedale.
Unlike you, I need no third party to defend me as I am not a fake negro serial liar.
You have NEVER been able to prove any of the slander you hand out to anyone you can't handle with your Room Temp I.Q.
I fail to see why the moderator has not shut this liar down as he has contributed NOTHING to the site except dumping a couple of Rugers and is pirating threads with off topic BS.
I'll not post on this thread anymore as it is obvious it just gives this whackjob another reason to mess up the thread with his off topic BS and lies.
He lies about others, he lies about where he lives, who he is, what guns he owns, about his phantom Marine and that he is a professor at a major university. Given the number of "different" people on the Net, someday, he'll attack the wrong person and will pay the price.
Obvious that he has serious mental issues that need professional help as well as medical intervention. He may pose a threat to others as his paranoid fixation on destroying anyone who does not submit to his irrational behavior is a hallmark of severe stalker psychosis.
Now that he has revealed his complete profile, name and address, the three Police files already open on him have been updated. Anyone with an ounce of sense can understand that did he actually live here, he would have long since been arrested and confined.
He'll stay hiding under his desk as he, like most Internet tough guys, talk a good game but (usually) know better than to follow up on their threats.
For those of you who wish to enjoy the thread, good luck as long as this nutcase is allowed to be here.
Adios for now.

The point went zooming over your head like a 747, Larry. You claim all of these "members" of a "club" having your back as well as various alliances with Hell's Angels and other badass groups. Yet when push comes to shove, it becomes readily apparent that there's nothing beyond your imagination, Larry.

Nice....
I love single shots, especial the High Wall. I´m owning two of this rifles. A .45-70, and a .30-30. On the big bore I have mounted a 6x42 Swaro. Shooting groups like this:

I always wanted a small bore High or Low Wall. But I have now so many rifles, and here in Germany we have the problem with the "correct" storage. Roll Eyes And with the next gun law......
Last month I sold my Marlin M1895M, to get space for my "last" projekt, a 6mmPPC. But a .223Rem Low Wall would
nevertheless very funny. And a .303Brit Martini, and a 8,15x46R Feuerstutzen, and, and,........ Big Grin

Trying to post pictures of my range results and of the gun itself. The first photo is my last 3 shots at 100 yards using factory Hornady 55gr V-Max. Not bad for an out of the box rifle with factory ammo. I think it's a keeper.

Here's some pictures of the gun. Should I take it down to a satin finish or leave it the way it is? Let me know what you think. By the way, I mounted a Zeiss 3x9x40 Conquest Scope MC with Leupold mounts/rings.

Thanks for your input.

I have a pair of 1885's, both with octagonal barrels. 22 Hornet and 223. I'm inclined to agree with above poster in preference to the factory finish but would be interested in seeing one taken down to matte, oil finish for comparison.

Mike,
That's a beautiful rifle. Are those low rings on your Leupold mounts? If you are still having difficulties with your thumb and hammer, I wonder if a higher ring set would give you a bit more room?

Cliff,

They're medium Leupolds. I have room to use my thumb but it's tight. I just picked up a 7mmRM in the High Wall, and it has high mounts so no problem at all.

For varmit hunting, which is what the .22-250 will be relegated to, the medium rings and tight are for the thumb will work fine.

Thanks

Today, someone has made a devilish deal. A Traditional Hunter .38-55, in exchange for 200 hunting cartridges 8x57. Unfortunately, I have little hesitated, but I think the offer still stands. I can get 200 rounds for a few bucks, from my dad. He´s a gunsmith. Not more than 300.-€.
Hmmmmm..... Should I try this?

Wow I would jump on it.
The 38-55s are not easy to find in the US and when you find one it is about $1200 US.

Prices are down in Germany. Gun-business is down. After the last change of the gun law, nobody will buy. Everyone will sell. You can get antike guns, in very good condition, like Lugers, C96s or Mauser rifles for 200-300.-€. Older hunting-rilfes, Ferlacher, Suhler or what ever, is unsaleable. Many old hunters give away many rifles. And the younger don´t buy so many, mostly one rilfes and one shotgun.
And the time are not better. Next year, we will probaply have a Red/Green government. They want to change everything again. No gunstorage at home, gun ban over .22lr for target shooters, generell handgun ban. And for hunters only a few rifles.
I´m only a target shooter and collector, have fourteen rifles and four handguns. To much for many politicans. Mad
But I'll still enjoy my hobby as long as it gets. And when the end is, is just closing. Then we just scrapped it all.
This is also a point, why I will not continue my father's business. He will next year 65 years old.

But now I will see first, that I get this gun. jumping

Today, I hold my new rifle in my hands. It was a little dirty, but after cleaning, I mean it´s a nice rifle. Nice wood.
But the first shooting, with old ammo I get from my dad, was a bad joke. The ammo was a "little bit" toooo old. It makes "klick", "plopp", and the bullet was set in the lands. Mad
So I must waite to get the ammo from the former owner next saturday. Frowner

Yes, next year we have elections. And it looks like that the left will win. These have, after the school shooting 3 years ago, in the program, to ban the legal gun ownership. Many anti-weapons organizations use these to advertise, that in England would be a total ban on guns for shooters. Many have no ideas.
But now we don´t let us spoil the mood. And continue to shoot. I have one shotgun, fourteen rilfes, mostly singleshot and four handguns, one revolver and three pistols. A used .22 target pistol, a Hämmerlie international "125 years Hämmerlie", I have "parked" at my dad´s gunstore, until I get a permit for it. It would be a huge loss, not just financially. Shooting, reloading and gunsmithing are my "life".
But when you want to know more, I highly recommend this book. Although it dealt mainly the BPCR rifles, but it is very informative.

My first 1885 was a 22-250, it got rebarreled to 32-40. So then I picked up a .223, last of the Browning Highwalls before they kicked those calibers to the Low wall. Last year I picked up a Win Safari special 1885 in 300H&H. Like them all.
I see the 6.5x55 Low Wall Win are starting to show up now. Trying to decide if I should grab one in 2013 or what. Damned nice guns. Loot is a bit tight after ordering a Kreighoff double rifle, though.

Is there any functional difference between High Walls and Low Walls? I'm looking at a Low Wall in .223 and just might get it.

No. Both rifle typs have the same adjustable trigger and the drilled holes for the scope mounts. The Low Wall is a little bit lighter and smaller.

And finally a picture of my "new" High Wall:

And for example, a picture of a Low Wall:
