I am new around here, but I love the forum. I was shown the site by a custom smith friend of mine. Really a great forum and I cannot wait to show you all a little of my work.

On that topic, I have a gentleman who has offered me a Winchester Lo-Wall action. The action is a little rough, but is complete, and looks like it should clean up nicely. It includes a .32 block which will work nicely for my project.

Pricing is what I am unsure of. There is a decent amount of work to be done; the extractor needs repaired or a new one made, the block needs drilled and a bushing installed, and a new firing pin made.

He is asking $400 for it.

Now... I have lots of plans for that little action, is that a fair price?

I do a LOT of work on original Winchester single shots, am building several right now and have several actions hanging on my project wall.

BTW I'm especially proud of My Daughter's red cap pistol(VBG)!

The parts you have shown are worth, IMO, about $200-$250, $300 if you're really determined and rich. I see some damage and some other questionable areas maybe needing further investigation so the price should reflect this.

I commonly sell average-condition complete low wall actions (when available) for ~$500-$550, actions that have already been 'blueprinted', with bushed firing pins, and are complete & properly timed, not necessarily polished/profiled on the outside but otherwise ready for any barreling or stocking work. This blueprinting and FP bushing labor is usually worth $200-$300 if done separately on someone else's action, so you be the judge.

I'll be happy to help with any questions, don't hesitate to PM me.
Regards, Joe

I just did a trip to the US and looked through the Cody Museum and also the Browning Museum in Utah.

Kiwi, I actually DO have an extra high wall action, might swap it for other actions or killer walnut stock blanks or Winchester wall parts or ???.

Nathan, the low wall action you've been offered is fitted with a single-set trigger which makes it more valuable, however the little secondary set sear is broken and that's an indicator of other problems. Also please be advised that if your block is a RF one (marked '32' on one side, no gas relief hole on top) then the firing pin work isn't as simple as you or your smith may think, because of the RF offset angle.

IMO if you could get this action for $300 then it would be a good deal for both of you. Plan to spend another $200-$400 for the repair & renovation but choose your smith carefully, the action timing on these can be critical.
Regards, Joe

J.D. Steele, thank you for your help. If you have an extra low wall, or come across one, please let me know. I let the gentleman know I was passing on this action. I would like to start with a action that is in proper shape I can barrel and stock without worrying about the action. Once I learn the action (single shots in general) a little better then I may start picking up ones that need work.

Thanks again.
