Hello,

could you please share your practical experiences with the "Hagn" action: Reliability, ergonomics (especially in a prone shooting position), trigger function (adjustability)?

Since I hunt in the mountains I plan to have a single shot rifle built in 300 win. mag. Although in general one shot is sufficient, from time to time a quick follow up is necessary. – I own a Krieghoff "Hubertus" (7x65R); a neat gun, but I am not really satisfied with the rifle.

Thank you very much!

Daniel

hagn rfles are great, and more than that people are very nice to deal with it,whats wrong with krieghoff 7x65r?i have single shot too in 7x65r custom german,765r is one of most versatile caliber in break open action, and one of best trajectory in 7mm familly,i would not own 300 win mag in single shot,

I am fine with the caliber. In fact I have 7x64 (sauer 200) aside. I like it very much.

What I don't like about the Krieghoff Hubertus is the handling of the rifle. For me, of course this is a subjective point of view, it is always a hassle to remove the cartridge, especially in a prone position. Furhter on, the rifle does not shot smoothly at all compared to the Sauer, even though weight, caliber, barrel lenght are almost identical)

Befor a few years, we sold an excellent Hagn rifle chambered for the 6,5x57R. The accuracy was very good, very smooth action and trigger pull. Not comparable with the Ruger #1 trigger.
With an 24inch barrel, the rifles was very handy.
Like other "standard" size breech block actions, like the Heeren, I would not chamber any round over the 8x57IRS.

I don't have a Hagn but I do have a Ruger #1 in .300 Winchester.
I like it very much and no it's not the lightest most compact singleshot for mountain hunting but it is a real practical compromise.

If you got a Hagn in .300 WM you're mountain hunting conbo would be similar to mine. I have a Alois Mayr Driverschols 7x57. It is super light and accurate but for my purposes sometimes I would rather be in the field with a bigger rifle because I have the possibility of running into a grizzly bear.
I know people who hunt the Alps with a .300 actually one guy I know in Germany has a Hagn in .300 Weatherby. The .300 is a little heavy for Reh or Gams but I would think it's perfect for Hirsch and your Steinbock especially at the longer ranges in the mountains.

I have a .300 Holland & Holland rifle built on a slightly modified Hagn action. It is very accurate, perfectly balanced, and the action works smoothly. I do not know about altering the trigger. It was set for me when the rifle was built and I don't know if it is adjustable. No matter. It is an excellent trigger and I wouldn't mess with it if I could.

I carry and use the rifle with open sights if I know I will be shooting within 100 yards. I have a 10 power Schmidt & Bender PM-I scope that I special ordered with with a Bryant ranging reticle. I use the scope to shoot further than 100 yards or if I need it to see better in limited light. The scope also has custom dials marked with distances based on 180gr loads. The scope is big but I use it only when I need the advantages of a big scope. The rifle handles like no other rifle I have owned.

When shooting from the prone I lift my elbow and roll the rifle to the side to let the empty case fall to the ground. Then I insert another cartridge, close the action and roll the rifle and my elbow back into position for another shot. It is not as fast as working a bolt rifle but much easier than working a break-open action from the prone.

It is my favorite rifle. I am often tempted to get another in a different caliber but the .300 H&H cartridge does nearly everything I need a rifle to do.

For questions about Hagn actions and falling blocks I would strongly recommend US and Canadian citizens to contact Knut Lie.
He is a former co-worker with Hagn, and has also constructed his own action. He is a highly qualified gunsmith and engraver, known by Hartmann&Weiss among others..

Thank you very much for your thoughts and observations! This will certainly help to decide.

@grenadier – your rifle is simply magnificent – and works!

I got to thinking about it after making the comment above about the .300 being heavy for some game. Actually I have had good results with the .300 Win mag on all sizes of game from fox without blowing the fur up to Brown bear, I guess that is why it is one of my favorite cartridges.
It seems like a pretty silly statement now that I remember shooting a Rehbock with a .300 win.

This guy is no bigger than a Reh or chamois and the singleshot .300 was the ticket.

OK Mr. T
Just for you. Off topic but hopefully nobody will mind. Alois has now made a magnum action for this rifle and like the Hagn you can choose what size receiver is appropriate for the caliber.
For what it's worth Alois and Herr Hagn are good friends. Alois lives in Mittenwald only a few miles from were Marten Hagn started his first shop before comeing to America and on to Canada.

I had to look that one up. It's a curious action. I've seen others on the same principle, but I can't recall the maker's name off the top of my head. It was more round bellied, and bit more gracefully shaped, as I recall.

I also have a Ruger #1 in the Boddington Special, chambered in 300 H&H. I don't do a lot of mountain hunting these days, but when I do, that's my go to rifle. With an elastic style cartridge holder mounted on the buttstock, it's actually quite easy to cycle a few rounds through it in a timely manner. As someone else here stated, it's not as fast as a bolt action, but not significantly slower either. Mine has the 26" barrel but I still find it a very handy rifle to deal with in the field due overall "shortness".
