Is anyone using the NECG peep? I have one for my 30-06 No.1A and I've had to hack it up pretty well to get it to regulate properly.
It shoots 6" high out of the box with 150gr loads and gets worse as the bullets increase in weight.
The stock sight and NECG's tallest bead (.435") are the same height, so I can't "add" at the front end. I filed, milled and drilled the peep down to get it to regulate (barely) with my exotic 30-06 165gr hunting loads (2800fps).
Does anyone have one of these things working out of the box? What caliber and model, if so?
Yea, I read. That's why I asked if anyone has them regulated at all, and what cartridge.
I really like the sight, especially with their bead, but I'm annoyed I had to hack it up and it still only regulates 150gr bullets... Maybe it works well with the No.1 in .218 Bee.
On my No.1 S in .45-70 with the NECG bead that is closest to the Ruger Factory in height, my rifle is dead on at 125 yards with the NECG peep almost in it's mid positon. I am shooting a 450 gr. LBT LFNGC bullet at 1825 fps.
I had one on a #1 .416Rigby, moved it up, down, switched several front sites, gave up and moved it to a #1 .458, moved it up, down, switched several front sites, gave up and moved it to a M77 .505 Gibbs. Haven't been able to shoot it yet to see if that will work but sure hope so. I ended up putting an AO ghost ring on both of the #1's with NECG larger beads and they are both right on.
I sent a message to NECG about it with a photo of the fairly radical mods I made to the sight and have gotten no response. Caveat emptor.
The AO sits even taller than the NECG, so I'm not sure that I can get it to work with my oddball wildcat (I call it "30-06 Springfield"). Sounds like I'll have to get a smith to taller the front caterpiller. Hey, I think NECG sells, those, too.
Many, many years ago, Rifle magazine had a very good article on mounting a Lyman shotgun sight on the Ruger No. 1. You might get a hold of the very good Rifle index and try to find a copy of that issue. I had it for long time, but lost it in a move. It was an elegant solution, and far better looking than the NECG or any other I've seen out there. Good luck.
